      MODERN MILLINERY MADE EASY

      1.—TRIMMINGS FOR WHICH THE HAT IS A BACKGROUND.

      When choosing a Picture Hat it must be remembered always that there are two outstanding qualities for which millinery designers strive in making this type of millinery. One is beauty; the other style or smartness. To attain both is the designer’s ambition.

      If you are really going to learn millinery you must decide in your mind whether you or your customer wants a sweet hat or a smart hat. Strive to design both. Have both qualities when it is possible, and be sure that you know in your own mind exactly what you want; you are then more likely to attain it.

      Dress Hat Trimmings may be Divided into Two Classes.

      A trimming which uses the hat as a background only, and trimming which is part of the design of the model.

      There are many times when a hat must be chosen for the trimmings rather than the trimmings for the hat. Flowers are usually the choice for garden type party hats; the large Picture Hat trimmed with flowers and velvet ribbon will always be the choice for garden party wear, also for dressy day wear hats and evening wear hats.

      Flowers, Ribbon, Veiling Combined.

      These must not be over-trimmed. Many beautiful flowers can be purchased ready made. These, of course, are expensive. If you have learnt to make Beautiful French Flowers (this course is available at moderate fee to all who desire to learn the art to save money), you can make your own trimmings at a moderate cost.

      Flowers and colours chosen to match or harmonise with both hat and frock make a much more pleasing ensemble than flowers just selected at random.

      There is no more picturesque hat to wear with organdi, lace, etc., than the Garden Hat. This lovely hat is one that lends colour and atmosphere to summer
