INTRODUCTION
Mirroring the Heart of God
Our purpose in studying the life of a well-known biblical character is to see how God works in the lives of others and how they respond to him. But of all the historical figures we could learn about, why David?
David was considered by most theologians to be the most successful king who ever lived, although he was neither the richest nor the wisest. That accolade would go to his son, Solomon. David’s life began what we call the messianic line. That is, his lineage led to Jesus Christ. Actually, the messianic line went back even further. It actually started with Adam, as Luke pointed out when he recorded the genealogy. But the messianic line as it related to kingship began with King David.
David was born to a man named Jesse. We know little to nothing about his mother, but we know Jesse was the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, and our text describes him as a Bethlehemite.
David was considered to be a man after God’s own heart. He was an effective leader, administrator, and shepherd, one who was mightily used by God. In the midst of all this, though, he stumbled and made some serious mistakes. His mistakes, missed opportunities, and weaknesses were a prominent part of his life. How can someone who began as a lowly, humble shepherd favored by God end up being a mighty king who nearly falls from grace?
God will do some amazing things through many of us, things that will have a direct effect on the advancement of His kingdom.
If you’ve ever made mistakes, you’re a good candidate to be successful. David succeeded in spite of his missteps, and there were more than one. He is most known for the sins of adultery and murder he committed with Bathsheba, but he made several other mistakes during his lifetime as well.
Again, why should we study David? I believe that God will do some amazing things through many of us, things that will have a direct effect on the advancement of His kingdom. We’re going to examine the life of a man who did great things as a result of his heart being focused in the right direction.
As we read about why God favored David’s humility, we will see that to be people after God’s own heart, we must obey God, actively engage with our families, and have a heart for authentic reconciliation with God and others.
Like David, we too will see limitless grace on our lives to do certain things for the kingdom. But it will only happen for us if we become living reflections of God’s heart.
CHAPTER ONE
Humility Propels Us Forward
To understand how David’s unexpected journey began, we must first look in the sixteenth chapter of 1 Samuel:
The Lord said to Samuel, How long are you going to mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem because I have selected a king from his sons.
Samuel asked, How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!
The Lord answered, "Take a young cow with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’
Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do. You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate to you. Samuel did what the Lord directed and went to Bethlehem. When the elders of the town met him, trembled and asked, Do you come in peace?
In peace,
he replied. I’ve come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice. Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, Certainly the Lord's anointed one is here before Him.
But the Lord said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the Lord see, for man sees what is visible, but the Lord sees the heart.
Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either. Samuel said. Then Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said,
The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either. After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse,
The Lord hasn’t chosen any these. Samuel asked him,
Are these all the sons you have? ‘There is still the youngest,
he answered, but right now he’s tending the sheep.
Samuel told Jesse, Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.
So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance. Then the Lord said, Anoint him, for he is the one.
So Samuel took the horn of oil, anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord took control of David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah. — 1 Samuel 16:1-13
Samuel had the task of locating the new king God had chosen. If we go back to chapter 13, we see the rejection of Saul, who was king over Israel. God has told Samuel he is pretty much done with Saul. But now your kingdom shall will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart...
(1 Samuel 13:14 NIV).
So God’s kingdom would begin to be established under the rule of David, a rule that would actually continue into the millennial period. But it could only happen with a man with the humility of a shepherd—a man after our Shepherd’s own heart.
A Disobedient King
While a young, humble shepherd was busy tending his flock, he was oblivious to the strife, greed, and disobedience happening far away that would eventually affect him. But what brought about the need for God to send Samuel out to find the next king—the one whom God favored?
Sometimes we’re so busy looking somewhere else that we miss what God is already doing in our lives.
Our present chapter in Samuel picks up during a period of national transition. Israel had wanted a king because they wanted to be like other nations. They wanted a leader who would go out and fight for them. Never mind that God had been doing this all along. Sometimes we’re so busy looking somewhere else that we miss what God is already doing in our lives.
