INTRODUCTION
The concept of happiness is simple. What we are striving for lies within ourselves. It starts with us and ends with us. Happiness is essentially getting back to our true nature.
Believe it or not, happiness is our true set point. Think of newborn babies and how they don’t have to work at being happy because it’s their natural state of being. They don’t extinguish their happiness by lying in their cribs worrying about their next meal, freaking out about the upcoming election or stressing out about bills. It is not until later in life that they let others train their thoughts towards problems and away from happiness.
We become so problem-oriented as adults that it seems like we no longer have access to happy thoughts. We end up spending the rest of our lives chasing after things that we think will bring that feeling back, never realizing that it never left us. It has only been covered up by our negative focus and unhealthy patterns of thought. Sometimes a simple distraction from our problems is all we need to lead us back into our natural state.
Happiness is a state of mind. How happy we are depends on how we choose to think. It is an art that can be cultivated by focusing on the little things in life that we often ignore or take for granted. We spend the majority of our lives striving to achieve success and wealth in order to obtain happiness. We get distracted by material objects, and captivated by the illusion that once we obtain them they will bring us happiness.
We never connect the dots and realize this one simple truth—happiness is a choice. In any moment in time we are as happy as we choose to be.
The irony of this statement is that most of us have no idea how to be happy or how to direct our thoughts towards things that make us feel good. We get so hung up on the problems of today and worrying about the obstacles of tomorrow that we give no attention to the things that are going right in our lives.
We are constantly distracted by so many unimportant aspects of life and by being so we end up postponing our happiness until some future event. We tell ourselves, I will be happy once I get that new job, or buy that new car, or find that love of my life, and then, if and when these things arrive, the happiness we feel is fleeting. It lasts a short time and then is gone before we know it. Instead of recognizing this flaw in our thinking we just continue down this path, assigning our happiness to material objects, putting our happiness off until tomorrow and then we get frustrated when that day never comes.
The major difference between a happy person and an unhappy person is that a happy person finds things in their life to make them happy right now while the unhappy person dwells on what is missing from their life. That is the grand illusion of happiness, the error of the ages, thinking that once you have everything you want you will be happy. The reality is that once you are happy, you will have everything.
We may write volumes on happiness but it’s of no use until it is experienced and felt by each one of us. That requires understanding and focused thought.
There have been many great thinkers and sages through the ages who realized this simple truth. We are going to explore their wisdom and apply it to our lives, not in search of something that eludes us but as an avenue to return to our natural state of being.
As the Dalai Lama said, The purpose of our life is to be happy.
Let’s Begin…
Chapter 1: Fundamental Laws of Nature
Wisdom Given
Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better.
— Albert Einstein (20th century theoretical physicist)
As we begin to explore happiness it’s important to take a step back and gain a basic understanding of the Natural Laws that govern our world. This will ultimately give us some perspective on both how things work and why. These Laws of Nature are constant and precise and thus ensure the consistency of this time space reality that we move around in.
Our world is governed by Natural Laws. They are in place at all times and under every circumstance. They never change. These laws are exact. Like mathematics, they provide the same answers every single time. They are consistent and predictable. Our work is to get into harmony with them so we can use them to our benefit.
Nature obeys us, as we first obey it, is an old saying but a true one.
First, we observe these laws in action in our daily lives. Then, through experimentation, we learn how they operate. Finally, we obey the underlying principles of these laws and use them to our advantage. It would be ignorant to think that Nature punishes us in any way for not using her laws properly. This is true of any law of Nature; if we obey her principles then Nature serves us. If we disobey she seems to punish us. Nature can only work through man, she cannot do man’s work for him, but she gives him access to the necessary tools and materials and keeps him well supplied with both.
Nowhere in the world is Nature opposed to man in any way, she silently waits for him to discover her. She will never contradict herself. If she works
