About this ebook

This short story book retells 3 of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous stories in a manner in which today's reader can better read.

There is no doubt Poe has written terrific tales of horror. The Raven stands among his most famous. Yet many readers have complained that these tales are written in an old time language that is hard to comprehend today.

An example: There is something in the unselfish and self-sacrificing love of a brute, which goes directly to the heart of him who has had frequent occasion to test the paltry friendship and gossamer fidelity of mere Man.

Knight is well known for retelling Grimm's Fairy Tales and this short book brings that same kind of retelling. Readers have raved at how much eassier the stories are to read and thus more enjoyable.

The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart and The Black Cat are stories that stand among his greatest and should be read by anyone who enjoys horror.

I write books for middle grade and young adults. They range from scary to spun fairy tales and more.  Most of the stories, including the scary ones, are basically fantasy tales. YOu need to have an open mind when you read them. :-) That's one of the reasons I enjoy writing for the younger audience. I really think it's also why many adults are reading these types of books. To escape reality.

I doubt there are many readers out there who have never heard of Edgar Allan Poe. His tales of horror are considered masterpieces.

Having said that, many of those same readers have never read his stories. The same can be said of many of the classic stories. They are written differently than fiction nowadays and can be tough to read and tend to be dragged out with an abundance of description. Readers today want to cut to the chase.

The wording from back then can be hard to understand as well.

That’s not just my opinion. When I published a book of ten forgotten Grimm’s Fairy Tales, I received many responses saying just that. People were telling me they had never heard of the tales and/or had never read them but after reading my retold version, they loved the stories and were thanking me for rewriting them.

I have italicized and highlighted quotes taken directly from the stories but have corrected any misspellings in those passages.

Anyway, one day I was trying to read The Raven and found myself having to keep rereading parts of it to make sense of the story. It was, to say the least, frustrating.

So I decided to make an attempt to bring back what I consider to be the best of these tales so the modern reader could enjoy them without going through the frustrations I went through. At the end of each tale is a link to the story as written by Poe.

By far The Raven was probably the hardest of the stories to retell. The story is written in prose and I wanted to capture the spirit in which it was written.

    I hope I’ve succeeded.
