About this ebook

Whenever the president faces a national crisis, he always calls on his favorite canine team—the Power Puppies! However, no one ever expected the next emergency to be the dirty work of the president's own pet cats. But after seeing the Power Puppies on Ellen, their favorite show, the cats decide to put their paws down.
From dumping rotten fish into the Pup Park under the White House to stealing Power Puppy DNA, these feline fiends will stop at nothing to get on Ellen's show and one-up the pups. Will the Power Puppies be able to outwit these crazy cats, or will they be overcome by a supercharged cat army? Mike, Vizzi, Meg, Cami, Frost, Shatter, Scarlet Shimmers, Zip, and Otis have to take teamwork to the next level if they want to keep their positions as the president's top dogs!
All profits from the publisher go to support the Humane Society of Indianapolis or other no kill animal shelters.

    About This Book

Students often ask to launch learning projects, but when Hollie Vessels’s class of twenty-eight fifth graders begged her for a chance to write a novel, she knew this would be the most challenging request to date. Writing a book is a monumental enough task on its own, but collaborating with such a large group and ending up with a great book seemed impossible. But the enthusiasm was contagious.

The young authors of Power Puppies started with hours of brainstorming, organizing, and cutting ideas until they had a list of characters and events that could be fit together with hard work. They spent several days creating the back stories for each character, carefully choosing the breeds of the animals that best matched their personalities and superpowers. When it was time to bring settings and plot elements together, students used online discussion boards, trading ideas and drafting bits and pieces. Partnerships were chosen to write specific scenes, and the next month was spent in student-teacher conferences, going over the drafts and suggesting revisions. In the end, Miss Vessels pieced together the ideas and drafts, added and connected scenes, and edited.

This book was the result, and the students want to use their work to raise money for rescuing animals. This book is proof that anyone at any age can create something important and change the world.

    Dedication

To our friends on Team 5-7 at Riverside Intermediate School,

Mrs. Bradley, Nikola Tesla, our hero, and all of the people who take action against animal cruelty and give furever homes to rescued pets.

    Special thanks:

We would like to thank our principals, Danielle Chastain and Brian Behrman, and our Superintendent, Dr. Alan Bourff. Without their support, we never could have published a book together. We also appreciate the support of our school board, community, and school. Everyone at Riverside has believed in us and cheered us on to success. We appreciate our parents and guardians, especially for allowing us to publish our work.

    Chapter One

BRIGHT RED AND orange flames everywhere. The U.S. Capitol destroyed. Right hand chipped off the Lincoln Memorial. Police, firefighters, and paramedics on every corner.

While I was hobbling my way through the rubble, I heard the sirens and saw the bright red and blue flashing lights. But the law couldn’t do the job alone. I scanned the skies, hoping the Power Puppies would be here soon.

My foot stung from where a salt pebble had struck me. Being a flea has its advantages, but when salt touches us, we dehydrate.

Yes, I’m a flea. My name is T.J., which is short for Traveling Joe. I’m from Tennessee, so I love country music, but those sirens were about as pleasant as a rooster repeating itself every five minutes.

The cries and screams were above my head, everyone panicking. Suddenly, a huge rumble struck below my feet, and I knew. The Power Puppies had arrived.

I hopped right up, and right in front of me were Mike, Meg, Cami, Vizzi, Otis, Frost, Zip, Shatter, and Scarlet Shimmers. I latched onto Mike’s golden fur so I could see everything. The German shepherd is a cyber genius who uses robotics and spies better than the CIA. He’s the coolest and funniest of the Pups. From his back, I could easily see the others turning their heads from side to side, pointing their ears, and checking out the scene.

Meg, the dachshund, was already angry. She started to duplicate herself more and more to save people from the falling Capitol. I found myself hoping she’d had her coffee today. Everyone knows she can really lose her cool without it.

Cami, the wolf shapeshifter, had already found the perfect job. The dome of the Capitol Building was trapping several hundred people, so she shifted into a gigantic body builder to lift the lid off
