About this ebook

There is a natural response that psychology states that I will either fight, or take flight from a traumatic circumstance. I do understand this, yet I have come to understand that to fight, or step out of the unknown, and have a positive outcome, I must choose to prepare my thoughts and actions first. I believe it is my position, and posture that can determine the outcome and my “dreams” can be “re-birthed.” I have found that true failure is when I become complacent, or do nothing at all. My purpose is now the process of having a meaningful life that I am taking to stand; consequently, beyond the different forms of distress that I have faced.

Minister Gary Tate

I am a Christian father of four grown adults; I have seen God's grace and mercy in my life. I will be happily married for 45 years this year (2016), to my wife, Anne. She is a woman of great faith and love, whom I share this life with. We overcame the statistics for marriages of Vietnam veterans, as my wife has told me. We have done this all while loving and caring for our severely and profoundly disabled daughter, which the stress alone could have added so many complications to our lives if we allowed it. We have raised four children into four grown adults. Our first born, Rebecca, has her B.A. in education and is a teacher. Our second child, Robert, works as a Supervisor for a cleaning company and was a coach with special needs children, and has a girlfriend named Natalie. Our third child, Mariel, has received her B.S.R.N., in Nursing, and was married in 2007 to Ronell. They have a son, Nadir, who turned 17 this year (2013). They have another sibling named Levi born into this world in 2010 and then Micah, conceived in 2012 and are expecting their third boy by the first week of September, 2014. Ronell and Mariel have a church now in the south suburbs of Chicago, Chicago/Dallas - Jesus Center. Finally, our youngest, Gayle, who, as I often say, "I believe I would not be the person I am today without her." I have a ministry named: Veterans Outreach/Marksman Ministry that is a sole-propriety ministry that I started in 2012. I have received my Associate degree in August of 2006 and my license as a minister, September 16, 2012 from God Carriers International Ministries.

    Dedication

For those, as I have, that made commitments and choose to continue in keeping them or begin the process in accordance to the principles set forth for us within scripture. May you, like me, Choose to stand in this process. (Ephesians 6:13)

    Acknowledgments

To God, Who, had and has kept me safe in the midst of all I faced, saved me in every way possible. He has helped me beyond words in what I can explain and is to this very day leading, guiding and instructing me as to my future by the Holy Spirit.

To my parents who loved me beyond all the challenges they faced. To my mother, Genevieve, she never gave up on me. Her insistence in my going to private school and church did, in time, have its’ positive effect. To my father, Robert, who instilled a military influence and as well gave me a work ethic that brought me many benefits.

To Robert, my brother born after me by two years, he had to spend most of his early life watching over his older brother. To Aileen, my sister born nine years later, I left home when she was quite young. To both of you, I love you and am very grateful for your love and understanding beyond all.

To my wife, Anne, who, I met right after I got home from Vietnam in 1970, at a localized college party, on May 20th that was being held at a local forest preserve. She had shared she had prayed for a Vietnam Veteran, I told her I wanted to marry her that day. About a year after we met, we did! She is a woman of great faith and love whom I share this life with. God’s word says, When a man finds a wife, he has found a good thing. I have been greatly blessed.

To my children, starting with my oldest daughter, Rebecca, then my only son, Robert, to my second born daughter, Mariel and finally to our last daughter, Gayle, who, as I say, I believe I, would not be the person I am today. She is our special child; she is currently severely and profoundly handicapped.

    Introduction

For about six years now, and after having shared interactive bible studies, as I listened and shared among many people concerning stress and trauma, yet I find that we all want to understand how to stand when facing what seems to be an onslaught against us.

This is true for those who have dealt with abandonment, as I did as a young boy or abuse in any form or the trials, we all can have. In whatever manner, many have had different experiences, types of shock, distress, reactions, and are looking for help or suggestions on how to hopefully be prepared for what we can do.

Stress and trauma are familiar experiences among Vietnam veterans, like me, that have had some similar reactions and feelings that are
