Introduction
As a caregiver, you dedicate much of yourself to care for someone you love.
You give your all to meet the needs of a family member with a physical or mental illness – often while juggling other commitments like working or raising a family – and it’s not easy. You feel you’re always on call, and you face tough challenges every day; this stress builds over time, and it takes a toll on your own health.
If you’re like many caregivers, your own self-care – from sleeping and eating properly to keeping up with friends and personal interests ¬– falls low on the long list of priorities competing for your attention. But it’s essential that you make time for your mental, physical and spiritual well being. It’s not a luxury; it’s a necessity for both you and your family.
Why Your Self Care Matters
Think about the last time you were on an airplane. During the safety demonstration, the flight attendant reminded you that in case of emergency, you must put on your own oxygen mask before helping anyone else.
It’s the same when you are a caregiver. When you are stressed and depleted, you aren’t able to care for someone else. The only way you can do this is by addressing your needs and treating yourself with love, respect and compassion.
Caregiving has the same effects as a chronic stress
