About this ebook

Soldiers - Season 1: Episode 10: Regret's Funeral – Part 1.

A Bitesize 1-hour read.

The assassin, Frieda Glockner, is hunting Regret. She doesn’t always do the dirty work herself, and this is one of those times. Thanks to a love-struck English lieutenant colonel.

Regret and the lads are trapped on the wrong side of the German lines as they advance on the Allied armies making a last, desperate stand at Ypres.

To evade the lieutenant colonel’s court martial, Regret must lead the lads into battle again. This time against a battalion that outnumbers them fifty to one.

The lads should be celebrating the destruction of Big Bertha, instead they are preparing to die.

    Regret’s Funeral

I’ve got an idea, Lofty said, rolling onto his side so he could see the others. I could nip down there, stick one of them wiv me bayonet, then nick his uniform. He stopped for a moment to refine his plan. Then I could pretend you was me prisoners and we could walk right through all them Germans.

The others stared at him without speaking. There wasn’t much to say that didn’t involve swearing.

Regret reached under his hip and tossed a small stone that had been bothering him the whole time they’d been lying on the wooded ridge while the German troops streamed by on the road below. He watched Lofty for a while and toyed with the idea of taking him up on his offer, if only for something to do. Good plan, Lofty, he lied. Couple of flaws in it.

Lofty beamed at him. Thanks, Sarge. He glanced at Sunshine. See there, mate? The sarge thinks me plans got floors.

Sunshine looked past him to Regret and back. You know what flaws are, don’t you?

Yeah. A frown crossed his face. Them things you walk on. They’re good, stops you fallin’ down into the cellar. He waited for Regret to explain.

Let’s say you go down there and… stick one of them wiv your bayonet.

Lofty started to sit up, ready for the off.

Hold on. Regret raised his hand. So you go down there. He pointed at the troops filling the road as far as they could see. Which one you going to stick?

Lofty edged up to the top of the ridge level with Regret and looked down. A little bugger.

    And the other bigger buggers?

    Lofty frowned again.

What do you think they’ll be doing while you’re nicking their dead mate’s uniform?

    Lofty sucked in his breath.

    Yeah, Regret said, exactly.

That’s a flaw, Sunshine said, and patted Lofty’s shoulder. Good plan though, otherwise.

Ta, mate. Thought it up all by m’self.

The little idiot’s got a point, though, Chalky said. Much as I like lying in the mud with all these insects eating me nuts, I was hoping to get back to the regiment and have a nice dinner. Before I died of old age and hunger.

Regret looked again at the troops swarming up the road towards Armentieres. Whatever the Germans were planning, it was going to be big. Problem was they were doing it between their position and the regiment. He’d hoped they’d pass by before dusk, or at least get off the road for supper, but it looked like they were
