The Voortrekker Monument Heritage Site - Anton Swanepoel

The Great Trek was a journey. It was a journey inspired by a very definite spirit and intention, and it had lasting and widespread results. That is why it is worth writing about… The great Trek was great not so much in comparison with the little treks that had gone on from time immemorial in the Cape Colony… It was great because it was, it still is, the central event in the history of European man in Southern Africa. The results that flowed from it can be traced far north of the equator and beyond. E.A. Walker, historian.

The Voortrekker Monument stands guard over Pretoria, the Jacaranda city, and serves as a reminder of the Great Trek (1835 to 1854) of approximately 20,000 Voortrekkers. This incident served as a catalyst to the events that shaped much of South Africa.

Architect Gerard Moerdijk (1890 – 1958) dreamed of a building that could stand over a thousand years as a testament to this great event. The Voortrekker Monument realizes that dream with ease, where it stands majestically on Monument Hill in a nature preserve overlooking Pretoria. Housed within its robust, yet captivating walls are four levels of magnificent splendor: including historical art pieces, antique Afrikaner daily objects, and The Flame. The Flame is a bronze lamp within a marble niche, in the Cenotaph Hall. It burns day and night, and was lit by an original torch brought to the Monument in 1938, which was the culmination of a countrywide torch bearing procession to the monument.

Standing guard over the Voortrekker Monument is Fort Schanskop. A short walk from the Voortrekker Monument is the Wall and Garden of remembrance, in honor of fallen South African Soldiers (1961 - 1994). Hiking and horse-riding paths run through the bush surrounding the monument, along with a Heritage Centre, a picnic site, and wild Koedoes roam the grounds. The Voortrekker Monument Site will leave you breathless, and can fill a full day to see all the sites.
