    INTRODUCTION

    RUNNING TOWARD THE BATTLE LINE

When the Philistine came forward to meet David,

David ran quickly toward the battle to meet the Philistine.

    (1 Samuel 17:48)

The worst possible scenario as you go through suffering is to stop growing, become bitter instead of better, and remain the same. To go through such hardships complaining and grumbling is a waste of the potential you have to increase the depth of your character. It is a waste of time! Our Lord has so much planned for you to do and become, regardless of the outcome of your circumstances. During any hardship, you can become much closer to Jesus and others!

Are you, or is someone you know, suffering or going through hardships? Have you thought about how you want to get through these hardships or how you want to inspire others? Would you like to dominate your suffering, or let it dominate and conquer you? Are you ready to grow in Jesus, regardless of the cost? What do you want the result of your suffering to be? Do you want to be a person of valor or just a survivor?

I have been writing Learning to Suffer Well through my entire life. I have suffered emotional difficulties, many physical hardships, and financial crisis. Through these trials, I maintained my pastoral license with my denomination, graduated with honors from The Kings College and Seminary with a Bachelor’s degree in Theological Studies, Biblical Counseling emphasis, and trusted in Jesus – no matter what presented itself.

Most of you would like to have a positive attitude toward suffering and, yes, even pain. I have been where you are, blinded by pain and suffering and blindsided by hard diagnoses. I know what it’s like to grieve the losses of life and, yet, want to move forward quickly to retrieve my hope in the God who heals. I have found that not all is lost because the prognosis seems dismal. As long as God remains on His throne and my suffering doesn’t become all about me, I can trust in Him to be my emotional, physical, and spiritual strength.

As you read this book, you will learn that suffering well means to suffer according to God’s will and purpose. You will come to understand that pain doesn’t have to be our enemy. We don’t have to fight against it; we need to let it become the great equalizer. It brings our dreams and visions into perspective and creates a clear picture of what we are called to do instead of the things we feel we were meant to do. We will learn that whoever abides in Jesus will bear fruit, and capture a new level of intimacy. Goliath can be a giant linked to many hardships we suffer. Learning to Suffer Well will teach you to run toward the battle line when your giant arrives, much like David did in 1 Samuel 17:48.

Affliction, hardship, difficulties, and suffering can be a launching pad to greater ministry and service to others. You will have a chance to embrace beliefs that encouraged me on my journey and make them your own. They will become stones in your hands to fight your Goliath! You will come to believe that God truly does have a plan and a purpose for your hardship, and that dying to your plan and embracing His plan will draw you closer to Him and help you to grow and mature. During this growth, you will find joy in the midst of suffering. Joy will provide untold strength in your difficulties and enable you to lead others to the throne room in worship, even while you
