Hi Writing must be in my blood since my father (Harold Scott) was a writer, my sister was a writer and now my daughter is a writer. I have always enjoyed writing. Some of my inspiration comes from listening to children talk and use their imaginations. I also illustrate my books and I love to draw coloring pages and color them with children.

    Chapter 1 A Needed Vacation

Gabriella could not figure out what was going on with her family. First everyone is sad and depressed because of the loss of Gabby’s stillborn baby brother and now Dad is taking them all on a vacation? It just doesn’t make sense, Gabby thought as she looked through her clothes and put some in a suitcase.

Hi Gabby. Dad said as he wandered into her room. Are you finding what you need to pack?

I am but what is going on? Gabby asked with a worried expression on her young face. Gabby at 12 years old liked to be informed about what was happening in their family’s life but she knew there were things that she didn’t know about or understand.

Well, Dad drew the word out like he was trying to decide what to tell Gabby and what not to. You know Mom has been especially depressed over the loss of baby Josh. It has been hard on all of us. By this time we were all expecting a healthy baby boy to hold and cuddle and love. Dad sighed and sat on the edge of Gabby’s bed.

"We went to the Doctor today. Mom just isn’t getting over this depression like she should and we thought she needed to see the Doctor again. He called it postpartum depression. That is something Mothers get after the birth of a baby. Well the Doctor suggested we take a trip or something to help get Mom’s mind off of our loss.

I know this is awfully quick but I have the time right now at work to take a break and Jeff offered the use of his mobile home so we are going."

Where are we going? Gabby asked her eyes sparkling. She loved new things and the thought of a trip and seeing different regions of the world was exciting.

I thought we might head west and see where it leads us. Dad suggested. I wouldn’t even object to ending up in Alaska. Would you?

Gabby squealed her delight and threw herself into her Dad’s lap giving him a big hug. Both of them shared their excitement for a few moments then Dad said, We need to be a little quiet because Mom is resting. She agrees with the idea of a trip but doesn’t have the excitement we have for it. She will once we get started.

Dad stood ready to leave. Be sure and pack both cool and warm clothing. I don’t know how cold Alaska might be so put some very warm clothes in. Do you know where that Camping book is? I haven’t seen it for years but I guess we really haven’t needed it for years either.

Gabby thought for a moment. I think I know where it is. I was looking at it a while back. I’ll go find it.

Gabby thought about her Dad as she went to retrieve the book. His full name was Mark Traverst and Gabby thought he was very good looking with light brown hair and hazel eyes. He was tall too and she could tell he had a strong love for his family. This trouble they were having was hard on Dad. She could tell by the worried look in his eyes. Usually his eyes were so happy and sparkly looking.

Her Mom too was usually happy and content. Amanda Traverst was slender the same as Gabby but where Gabby had very curly hair, Amanda’s was slightly wavy. They both had blue eyes which Gabby loved the thought of sharing. She shared the light brown hair with her Dad while her Mom had dark blond hair. When Gabby found the camping book she couldn’t resist a quick peek inside and her Dad found her an hour later still looking at it curled up in a comfortable lounge chair.

Hey, I thought you were packing! We are never going to get on our way if you stop and read that whole book. Look how big it is. You will have plenty of time to study up on wilderness survival as we travel. He pulled Gabby to her feet and gave her a big smile then playfully shoved her in the direction of her bedroom.

As Gabby went through the living room she saw that Dad had the motor home about ready. It wasn’t a large one but she thought it looked like it would be big enough. She took a side trip and went outside to get a better look. The side door was open so she stepped up into the interior. It had a bed over the cab where she figured Mom and Dad would sleep and bunk beds in the back next to the bathroom. In between was a small kitchen, dining table and couch. Everything was decorated in a soft green and cream color. It felt so soothing Gabby couldn’t wait to get started. Everywhere a cabinet could be squeezed in, there was one. Gabby loved the closeness of everything. There were a few drawers so Gabby opened one and saw all kinds of kitchen gadgets. The cupboards in the kitchen were full of dishes and even some food. It had the cutest little refrigerator! She decided to dub it Old Betsy just for the fun of it.

As Gabby was leaving the camper Dad came around the front with an armload of pillows and blankets.

Dad, why don’t we use those sleeping bags I saw in the attic instead of blankets? Gabby asked. They will be warmer and we won’t have to try to find places to wash sheets.

Well, my practical young daughter, I think you have a very good idea there. Will you take these sheets and put them back in the linen closet and get the sleeping bags. Make sure you get two of them alike so I can zip Mom and mine together.

Gabby took the sheets and set off for the attic. While up there she found a camping lantern and a small fold up ax. Gathering everything she headed back to the camper.

It wasn’t long before Dad declared it time to leave. Why are we leaving this late in the day, Dad? Gabby asked. Wouldn’t it be better to get an early start tomorrow? Gabby looked at the late afternoon sun.

"No, I want to go now and camp somewhere close so if we have forgotten anything we can come back and get it. We are just going to the State Park outside of
