Prologue
It’s amazing how God brings the right people at the right time into our lives to accomplish His purpose. Nearly ten years ago God stirred something in my spirit and spoke to me about writing a book. My initial response was one of being somewhat perplexed because I knew I wasn’t a writer and I had never given thought to anything like this before. Honestly, I really wrestled with the concept for some time and I even began doubting that it was God that spoke to me. But at the same time I was quite certain this was something that God really was impressing on me, hence the wrestling. I also sensed Him telling me that He would let me know when the time was right to write the book, so until God revealed to me His timetable I chose not to talk about it.
For a long time I never mentioned a word to anyone about this word that I received from the Lord. Then several years after this occurrence I told my counselor about what I thought God was telling me to do. We then talked about it and prayed about it on several occasions. She would sometimes encourage me to follow what I felt God had placed on my heart.
Just recently all the pieces began to come together. God brought Melanie Johnson into my life who was in the business of helping people write and publish books. Through Melanie and her business partner, Jenn Foster, I became connected with the right people and this book is the result. It happened in God’s time. When He first laid this on my heart I had no idea how it would ever come together, now it is a reality. It always amazes me how God syncs me with the right people at the right time.
I have found throughout my life that God works according to His timetable and not mine. The pages of this book reveal a God that has been compassionate and gracious as He allowed me to work through a spiritual maturing process. At times I felt like it took too long, but then God revealed to me that He has purpose in every circumstance in our lives, that His timing is always perfect, and that it is possible to be content in any and all situations.
Thank you for taking time to walk through my journey with me. While these pages do not cover every detail of my walk, I trust you will catch a glimpse of how God worked in my life and through that gain an understanding that God is also working purposefully in your life. You may be facing circumstances that you don’t fully understand, but know this, the pruning and purging in your life will soon give way to an awakening and you will begin to see God’s purpose. And His purpose and His timing are always right.
My journey is not complete and I know there are many more people with whom God will sync
me. In anticipation of that I launched a website to enable people to share their story at www.soulfulpeople.net. I encourage you to visit the site and if you have a soulful story to tell I would love to hear from you.
Chapter 1 - The Seed of
Generational Legacy is Planted
We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that He has done.
–Psalm 78:4 ESV
As I was growing up I was fortunate enough to have two grandmothers that were very strong influences in my life and I often turned my attention to their wisdom as I encountered various obstacles and challenges along my journey. However, one of my grandmothers was especially a tremendous inspiration to me and really served as the spiritual backbone of our entire family. As the oldest of all the grandchildren I was the first grandchild privileged to learn and benefit from her wisdom. My relationship with her was such that I viewed her as my spiritual mother. Although she has now passed from this life, I can still hear her voice telling me, Tonja, do all things through love.
She would then re-emphasize, "Tonja, all things; all things through love." Interestingly, when I learned that at a very young age little did I realize those words would be a key phrase for my personal journey throughout my life, but it certainly has proven to be just that. I had to learn to do all things through love, but it wasn’t always easy.
In similar fashion, my mother and father also had a significant influence in my life, each having their own unique qualities from which I learned so much. Dad had a distinguished time of service in the United States Army and received many medals and awards for his dedication. He has always been so warm, sensitive and thoughtful
