    Second Lieutenant Ryan McGriffin, U.S. Army

    It was her least favorite chore, but she insisted on doing it herself instead of pawning it off to the lower enlisted like Major Glennie suggested. It was nothing too difficult, all she had to do was collect PowerPoint slides from every staff section and company, make coffee, ready the projector, and prep the conference room for the battle update brief, or BUB, a meeting between key leaders and staff, by setting up the lawn chairs again, all 50 of them, stacked in two columns locked inside a closet—with the scarcity of chairs on base and thieves abound, Glennie placed McGriffin in charge of the conference room’s supply, threatening to hold her accountable should even one go missing—it was payback for ignoring his suggestion, but she refused to wax indignant over this overblown responsibility, which only angered him further, the driving motivation for pouring herself into the task.

    After rolling the commander’s and command sergeant major’s high-end office chairs (locked in a separate closet) into the room, she collected the coffee dispenser and walked to the only reliable source of fresh coffee in the building: the commo shop.

    Hey, Fog. she greeted the shop’s lone occupant. "So…there’s this BUB thing going on tonight, right? And the thing about BUBs, they’re really boring and the attendees really like coffee—"
