L Frank Turovich (1956- ) was born and raised in Flint, Michigan where he became a rabid reader of science fiction, fantasy, mysteries, comics and everything else not nailed down. He’s spent time in the Marine Corp before breaking into writing via articles in Nibble Mac and Inside BASIC magazines, then graduated to technical writing, training, and managing teams for companies like Zedcor, Metrowerks, Motorola, Freescale Semiconductor, and Nokia, before leaving to pursue his fiction writing ambition. He currently resides in Michigan in a home filled with books, computers, and two cats (Java and Larry).

Explain why we’re walking again?
Tywynn asked. Her thighs were trembling from the steep incline they had been climbing for hours, her back a knot of pain. She was footsore, tired, and ill-tempered from stumbling over loose rocks, rain-washed galleys, and the exuberance of her companion.
The Worldheart is no place for horses,
Skar Bergulf Doorishmurk said. His casual reply masked his excitement of returning to his mountain homeland. Three barely healed parallel scars scored him from forehead to cheek to chin and flush from exertion. He wheezed under his own burden like a jungithar, a bulging pack that weighed almost as much as her. Like as not they’d break a leg or throw a shoe, not good in the mountains.
The petite Alfr glanced down at the rough path the young clansman claimed was a major trade route of his people. She had followed squirrel trails more permanent than this washed out excuse of a road. The ridge lines far above them with its open sky beyond made her uncomfortable. She longed for the shady security of her forest home, the friendly closeness of overhead boughs and their concealing leaves of fir, aspen, oak, and maple trees. She sighed. It might be years before she trod those leaf strewn pathways again.
Why had her mother, the tribal shaman, ordered her to accompany this human? Was it because she had shared in his elevation
