    Fire Sale - Adam Gaines

    going…

    THE ATTRACTION OF THE BREEZE

LIGHTS UP on a Street Corner. The two sides of a building, make one corner. There’s artificial sidewalk and curb, but to really sell things: a street lamp!

Hanging under the lamp is a 20 year old girl ALYSSA.

Passing by is a 40 year old man RICHARD. He’s got an unlit cigarette in his hand.

    RICHARD

    Excuse me?

    ALYSSA

    Yes?

    RICHARD

Do you have a light? I have a cigarette, just no flame.

    ALYSSA

    Yes.

    She hands over a lighter.

    RICHARD

    Thanks.

    ALYSSA

You’re just holding a cigarette. To have a cigarette. It’s a two-step process. You must possess the cigarette and then something to ignite it with. If you have both, then you can truly have a cigarette.

    RICHARD

    Can’t fault that logic.

He hands the lighter back over.

    ALYSSA

Why don’t you have a lighter?

    RICHARD

I lost it awhile back, and then I just thought this might be more social. Because of that two- step process you educated me on.

    ALYSSA

    Weird.

    RICHARD

I can see that. What do you smoke?

    ALYSSA

    Cigarettes.

    RICHARD

    No, I mean your brand?

    ALYSSA

    American Spirit.

    RICHARD

    Gotcha.

    ALYSSA

    You?

    RICHARD

    Marlboro’s.

    ALYSSA

    Classic.

    RICHARD

Do you mind if I smoke this here?

    ALYSSA

    It’s not my corner.

    RICHARD

    Thanks. Care to join me?

    ALYSSA

    I’m out.

    RICHARD

    Care for one of mine?

    ALYSSA

    No, thank you.

    RICHARD

    Loyal.

    ALYSSA

    Yes.

    RICHARD

I can smoke this in silence.

    ALYSSA

    I’m not sure of that.

    RICHARD

    I’ll shut the fuck up.

    ALYSSA

No, I mean, that’s your call, but I wasn’t saying that to put you in your place, it was just like a witty thing I thought to say. I feel like my generation is always racing to the snarky punchline.

    RICHARD

    Are you a comedian?

    ALYSSA

    No.

    RICHARD

There’s a couple generations between us. I know that.

    ALYSSA

    What’s your letter?

    RICHARD

    Huh?

    ALYSSA

    Generation what?

    RICHARD

    I don’t know, what’s yours?

    ALYSSA

I think they call us millenials, but I’m not sure.

    RICHARD

I had encyclopedias in high school, you had Google.

    ALYSSA

I can remember high school like it was yesterday, you’ve had a couple reunions.

    RICHARD

I’m aware of the large age difference. I’m not going to hit on you, molest, or kidnap you.

    ALYSSA

Way to take the danger right out of the situation.

    RICHARD

    Sometimes the conversation is enough.

    ALYSSA

What a pedophile would say caught empty handed on the way back from the playground.

    RICHARD

    You’re making me uncomfortable.

    ALYSSA

Wouldn’t that be funny? If you called the police on me.

    RICHARD

    Come on.

    ALYSSA

    Okay, I’ll stop.

    RICHARD

    You waiting for somebody?

    ALYSSA

    No.

    RICHARD

    Then what are you doing?

    ALYSSA

I live nearby. Out for a walk.

    RICHARD

    Then you stopped.

    ALYSSA

    Sorry?

    RICHARD

When I met you, you weren’t in motion.

    ALYSSA

I guess so, I went for a walk, and then stopped walking. You’re caught up.

    RICHARD

This will be going in the biography.

    ALYSSA

You brought the snark. Good job.

    RICHARD

    It didn’t feel great.

    ALYSSA

    You get used to it.

    RICHARD

I’ll let it be your thing.

    ALYSSA

    And my generation.

    RICHARD

You forgot to say ‘much younger.’

    ALYSSA

I was trying to ease up. You seemed like you needed a break.

    Beat.

    RICHARD

Do you think anyone’s ever actually bumped into someone on a corner, turning a bend.

    ALYSSA

You mean like run into someone they know? I’m sure it
