    1. Introduction to Photography

    Cameras

    There is a range of many different types of cameras on the market, it is important to understand the features of each one in order to decide which is the most suitable for your needs.

    Compacts

    These are small point and shoot cameras with limited features. They are small, pocked sized cameras aimed at users who sacrifice control for ease of use. They range from those cameras that have fixed or basic autofocus, a fixed lens with a digital zoom to those that are more advanced with features more suited to advanced users such as sophisticated autofocus, advanced metering, powerful zoom lenses multi-mode flashes and various exposure modes.

    Bridge or Compact System Cameras

    Bridge cameras fill the gap between compacts and larger cameras. They are more sophisticated than the compact with larger built in zoom lenses, and many of the features found on DSLRs. Newer more advanced models, known as Compact System Cameras or CSC’s have interchangeable lenses and most the facility to add an external flash.

    SLR /DSLR

    The camera type widely chosen by more advanced and professional photographers is the SLR (single lens reflex) or the digital version, the DSLR.

    DSLRs start at a similar price point as bridge cameras and offer many of the same features. The key difference between the two is the DSLRs interchangeable lenses. This means there is an almost infinite choice of lenses that can be added the camera making the DSLR a more
