What is Your Discipline Style?

The word discipline can have some negative connotations associated with it. When it comes to parenting, discipline is used to civilize your children. Discipline does not have to be a bad thing. It can be a fun and awarding time for you to show your child what the limits of their behavior are.

All children are different, and not all discipline styles will work for every child. So if you are looking for a quick fix solution to help your child grows as an individual. I am sorry. Finding the right discipline style for your child or children is a trial and error process.

The Drill Sergeant vs. The Pushover

For years, most parents thought of discipline in two forms: The Pushover and The Drill Sergeant. A drill sergeant has no room for questionable acts. Either a child does what he or she is told or the child will face a punishment. A pushover has no limits or boundaries with their children. The child runs the show. They can do whatever they want without any fear of discipline from their parents. Leave the drill sergeant in the military. On the flip side is the pushover. Grandparents are pushovers. Parents should be more stern than a pushover and more flexible than a drill sergeant.

Psychologists have divided parenting styles into four categories.

The first category is Authoritarian Parenting.

A drill sergeant would fit into this category. Authoritarian parenting gives the child little to no control over their life. The parents make all the decisions regarding the child's welfare. They set the rules and do not give any reason as to why. Explaining the reason is important to the child's development. Reward and punishment is also a big part of this parenting style.

This type of parenting style can result in self-esteem issues in children. It can also lead to secretive and rebellious behavior.

The second category is Authoritative Parenting.

Authoritative parenting focuses on teaching children morality and giving them acceptable choices so they can exercise
