Introduction
With well more than 20 million inhabitants, half of whom come from outside the metropolitan area, Ciudad de México, also named Distrito Federal, better known in English as Mexico City, is one of the largest cities in the world. It is a crazy and zany place where half a dozen emotions can be experienced within hours of each other and one day never resembles the next. It is a city that takes pride in regularly attempting to break or create Guinness World Records, claims to have the most museums in the world, and concentrates on providing art and culture to the public. All this, plus more, is what makes Mexico City one of the great cities of the world. If you are not interested in staying indoors and ignoring life, this might well be the city for you.
Mexico City is what most other over-sized cities are not – the unexpected. This carries over into the teaching sector as well. Either way, the competition is minimal, permanent competition even less so.
Low-cost private classes given by native speakers are much in need in Mexico City (as well as its neighboring state of Estado de Mexico). Even though this is the capital and financial capital, salaries remain low (not much higher than the rest of the country) while costs continue to rise. You will experience the effect of this from the beginning when
