About this ebook

On the way home from a draining night of work, Theodora (called Teddy, by her friends and family) finds herself guilty of something she'd never dreamed: a hit and run that results in a child's death.

Wracked with guilt, Teddy hides her secret, carrying on as if nothing happened, but when the victim's zombie returns, bringing along her own kind of disturbing justice, Teddy learns innocent little Mara isn't exactly what she seemed.

And Teddy wonders, would jail be better than eternity with the vengeful girl's accusing spectre.

Is it a small price to pay--and for what?

    BICYCLE REQUIEM

    CHAPTER ONE

Man that was a long shift!

The clock on my dashboard flipped over, from 7:59 to 8. AM, that was. I yawned and the numbers blurred.

    Home, here I come.

The overnight shift at Renaissance Cove was going to be the death of me, I was sure. Another yawn gripped me and the road before me blurred. My eyelids drooped. I shook myself and reaching out, cranked the radio up. Loud.

Alternative rock music pumped through the car and made my ears ring. I turned the noise back down.

    Ka-thump!

The knock as my wheels rolled over something jolted me awake. What the hell was that?

A glance to my rearview mirror showed me a wisp of red, a hint of yellow. I peered harder and my foot rose from the gas. Were the colors only from the sunrise?

    No.

In the tiny frame of the rearview mirror, a little girl’s body formed out of the morning fog. Her red coat lay open to the cold and so, it seemed, did her rib cage. Blood seeped out to glisten on the pavement.

Oh, shit! Heart thumping, I jammed my foot on the gas. Oh, shit. Oh, shit!

Part of me wondered what to do? Yet some tiny voice in my head or my pounding heart, screamed, Go!

    Home. Bed.

This was nothing but a nightmare.

Against reason, I followed the voice’s advice. A hint of coffee, and the scent of the detergent that lingered on my comfy sheets, wafted on the air and I trailed after its beacon.

Like the fool that I am.

I should’ve stopped, I know. The thump under my wheels left no doubt in my mind where the candy-apple red bicycle had gone, and the fate of
