Chapter 1: What are celestial bodies?
Celestial bodies are magnificent. Several scientists, astronomers, astronauts and other people involved in the study of astronomy are fascinated by planets, the existence of different types of stars, the Milky Way, constellations, the Aurora and other celestial bodies.
i) Let’s talk about planets first.
Like planet Earth, every planet moves in an orbit and around a star. Each planet has its own axis. According to various scientists, astronomers and astronauts, there were nine planets in total: Pluto, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Uranus, Earth, Neptune, Venus and Mercury. However, astronomers recently ruled that Pluto is ‘no longer a planet’ because its orbit was found to create that of Neptune’s.
ii) Apart from the planets, there are various stars, too. Stars are held in place by their own gravity. These are defined as ‘luminous spheres of plasma’.
The largest star visible is the sun. There are several other types of stars but these aren’t visible to the naked eye. Here are some examples:
Dwarf stars - These stars have reached the end of their lives and are said to be remnants of other stars (also referred to as stellar remnants). Some discredit them as stars because they are not capable of undergoing nuclear fusion.
Neutron stars - Like Dwarf stars, these are stellar remnants of larger stars that had undergone massive explosions.
Red Giant stars - These are stars that have run out of hydrogen and end up as Dwarf or Neutron stars and, in some cases, also become black holes.
Most stars are big ‘balls’ or sphere of gas. The stars that we can see in the night sky consist of large amounts of helium and hydrogen. Those that cannot be seen have exhausted their hydrogen reserves. This does not mean that they have ceased to exist – they just cannot be seen by the naked eyes.
iii) One of the most fascinating features of space is the Milky Way. Astronomers continue to study this magnificent phenomenon. So far, what we know about the Milky Way is that it is
