About this ebook

The Free version of scientific evolutionary "Quotes" and as the title and cover (a modern dolphin and an ancient seemingly extinct "marine lizard") suggests, and the quotes reveal, we may need to seriously re-examine our current understanding of descent with modification.

Evolution: Will the Real Ancestor Please Stand Up
Author

Maria B. O'Hare

Although my main academic training is in Archaeology (PhD), as my research became increasingly independent, I began digging around some old dusty long forgotten archives and soon discovered that our current genetically-driven concept of evolutionary dynamics itself evolved and often, not by natural means. I began to realise that there had always been well-founded scientifically sound criticism of our Darwinian model and indeed, perfectly plausible alternatives, hence, as these exciting and much aligned alternatives are finally beginning to get the scientific recognition they have always deserved, I began writing about these in a blog entitled: digging up the future dot com This research and ongoing discoveries have made their way into several publications listed here (See the 'Little Book of Evolutionary Quotes', 'The Epigenetic Caterpillar: An Alternative View of the Peppered Moth Phenomenon', 'Lamarck and the Sad Tale of the Blind Cave Fish' and watch out for forthcoming book about D'Arcy Thompson's dynamic evolutionary model). Another related book - soon to be released, is entitled: 'Don't Count Your Children Until They've Had the Pox' which explores a very different form of non-genetic generational immunity using original death statistics from some of the deadliest contagions known to humankind with a focus on Ireland and comparing these with other developed nations. Other publications by the author range from self-publishing to science fiction dealing with a futuristic (evolutionary) genetics theme and are also published under the imprint: DiG-Press. Evolution - Maria B. O'Hare

    Preface

Will the real ancestor please stand up reveals through the quotes of prominent scientists involved in evolutionary biology and excerpts from science papers, just how web-like evolutionary relationships really is. The tree has toppled as Lynn Margulis (microbiologist and well-respected for her own contribution to evolutionary theory) states. And the Modern Synthesis is crumbling, apparently beyond repair. This is according to Eugene Koonin (a recognized expert in the field of evolutionary & computational biology). All materials are fully referenced throughout and have live links for you to go deeper if you wish. Plus, it shows that I'm not making any of this up - or 'quote mining' 'There is no agenda in  compiling these quotes etc, other than a deep love of science and the need to understand and get to the truth of the matter, whatever that may be.

The following little book will present quotes ranging from the story of how snakes and cows ended up sharing a quarter of their genes, to how, in one fell swoop (well at least in evolutionary timescales) some lizards lost their legs and became slithering beasties. These statements will also reveal how the common ancestor may not have been an entity, but an ancestral CONDITION (state of being) and there may have been many roots. Evolutionary levels of complexity appears to have taken quantum leaps going from the generalist to the specialist, shaped and formed by epigenetic remodeling of genomes according to environmental conditions and aided by genetic novelty as seen in the myriad of genetic exchange across all species boundaries and rather convoluted assortment of hybridization events along the way. All of this goes to make our old family tree a rather bewildering thicket.

All of this evidence brings into serious question our current linear view of genetically determined descent with modification.

This is the free copy* which, I would love you to share with friends, family, loved ones, and just about anyone who you feel would enjoy it. And/or you could even share it with people you don't like. It may annoy them - for free. This book
