Chapter 1: How did the Paleo Diet come about?
The rules and guidelines of this diet are simple: you eat what your hunter-gatherer ancestors ate. Impossible, you say? What did the grunting, chest-thumping cavemen know about food, taste and nutrition?
Well, I’ll tell you this. They knew enough to sustain for millions of years. They were agile hunters who fought mammoths and saber-toothed tigers. They lived to a ripe old age beyond their 90s. They did not suffer from modern lifestyle diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol level and heart diseases. Instead, the most common causes of death then were accidents, animal attacks and old-age.
The word ‘Paleo’ comes from the word ‘Paleolithic’ which is used to define things relating to the period when humans used tools and weapons made of stone. The Old Stone Age, if you will.
If we think back on the History of the World, we can see that early mankind has been on this planet for millions and millions of years. For a long time in the beginning, they derived their main source of food from foraging, gathering and hunting in nature. The food habit of these millions of years has been genetically inherited in our body structures.
According to S. Boyd Eaton, who is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Paleo Diet:
