    What is Adult ADHD?

    ADHD in general may be one of the most researched and yet still most misunderstood mental health conditions afflicting members of our society.  Despite being the most researched mental health condition in children, there is still much we don’t know about ADHD, especially when it comes to how it affects adults.  In order to understand this condition and make the best choices about getting help and support for the symptoms and problems it causes, we need to have a basic understanding of what it is and what it isn’t.  So, here is what we do know, based on the currently available research.

    What We Know About ADHD

    ADHD is a brain-based disorder.

    ADHD or the collection of symptoms we call ADHD results from neurological differences in the brain.  We know that children with ADHD exhibit different levels of specific neurotransmitters than children without ADHD.  We can only assume that the same is true for adults with the condition since there has been very little research into ADHD in adults.  We also know that the reward system of the brain, which produces and utilizes dopamine, seems to work differently in ADHD brains than it does in brains without
