A wise man once said, Let food be thy medicine. That man was Hippocrates, and he is regarded as the father of modern medicine. He advocated a more natural approach to healing more than 2500 years ago and steadfastly held that we needed to eat better to stay healthy. Now granted, this was a very long time ago, but his assumptions have been held up over the course of time by research. Science has revealed remarkable health benefits and healing properties that are associated with certain foods. There are many movements that rely solely on holistic cures with things like honey and a plethora of spices taking the lead in healing.

Now I certainly am not trying to say that this does not have its merit, but for me, Hippocrates only got it half right. Yes, undoubtedly, the right foods keep you healthy and have the power to heal, but he was only speaking physically or biologically. I firmly maintain that food is good for the soul too. There is nothing that soothes the pain of a truly dreadful day than coming home to a roast dinner with all the trimmings, or maybe a chicken pot pie cooked to golden perfection.... Oooh, what about a piping hot lasagna? As delicious as these meals are, they present a host of problems when you are a paleoite who has shunned dairy and grains. And let me tell you, life without these types of foods was for me, non-negotiable! I adore pies and pasta, revel in stews, and can polish off four bowls of soup on a cold winter’s day without even blinking.

Comfort food was going to be my paleo unraveling. I had come so far and worked so hard to get my health under control, and I didn’t want to lose my progress, so I began searching for other ways to pull these sorts of meals together. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed! I have chosen 35 of the best recipes from my experiments and tweaked them to perfection so that you can enjoy delicious comfort food whenever the mood strikes.

Once you have worked your way through this book, the mood is going to strike OFTEN!

Hearty Soups

Basic Bone Broth

Homemade bone broth is so easy to make and can be used as a base for soups, sauces, stews, and curries. Making your own enables you to extract important nutrients from bones that we don’t get from other sources in our modern diets. You can measure the quality of the stock from how gelatinous it is when cold. The more gelatinous, the better it is! Cooking times vary, depending on the bones and cooking method you choose. Allow 6 - 8 hours for chicken broth and 8 – 10 hours for other types of bones. Have fun experimenting when it comes to herb combinations to include in your broth. Your choice will depend on the type of bones you have chosen. Simply tie them all together in a bit of cheesecloth, and let them boil in the broth. All the flavor will seep out, and you can easily remove the leaves
