About this ebook

The fifth book in this series recounts the nostalgic and moving history of fighting in the skies during World War II from every fighting Air Force on both sides of the Atlantic, and the stories of the men and machines that made those forces great. It follows the development of military aircraft by the RAF and the USAF, from Fighters to the Big Bombers that ruled our skies during World War II from the Battle of Britain to the Atom Bomb.
“The RAF were losing men and machines at an alarming rate over the channel and France. Resources and moral were at an all time low. Britain desperately needed allies if it was to hold off an invasion. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941. America joined the war and Britain found its closest ally.”

    The Piston Warriors of WWII

In 1939 the shadow of war loomed over the world stage for the second time that century. It was a prelude to the darkest and most destructive chapter in the history of mankind, the Second World War. It proved to be more costly in both human terms and resources than any other conflict known to mankind, eclipsing even the carnage of the Great War. The cause and effect of this intensive period of conflict even up until this very day has profoundly affected the world we live in. The people who lived and fought through the period would never again capture the intense feelings and experiences they endured, the fear, the courage, the loss and the intensity of life, the opportunity to fight for strong convictions had never before been more apparent.

Many countries fought the war on their own soil, the rest rallied to their aid offering resources and manpower and if necessary their lives for their belief in freedom and self-determination. The early days saw the optimism of it will all be over by Christmas but the reality was six long years of destruction and bloodshed that reached virtually every corner of the globe. Huge battles were fought, some were won, some lost, but all of them contributed to the eventual downfall of the Axis forces. In those early dark months one nation stood alone against Germany’s might, Great Britain. The responsibilities for keeping the invaders out of the Island fortress fell on the Royal Air Force after the army’s defeat at Dunkirk where the fields and beaches now lay waste to the aftermath of a bloody battle. The RAF rose magnificently to the challenge during the Battle of Britain.

For the time being at least, Britain was safe but she sorely needed the help of her mighty cousin across the pond, the United States of America. The huge resources and courage of the colossus were brought to bear after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour in 1941.
