Learn How to Crochet from the Ground Up. Basic Stitches and Techniques of Crochet for Beginners - Betty Kraus

    All About Yarn and Equipment

In this chapter we’ll learn all about yarn and the equipment you will need to start your journey with the art of crochet. Make no mistake; crochet is an art form. You take simple yarn and a crochet hook and create projects which are unique and beautiful. Since you are starting out I would recommend you purchase good quality basic hooks and equipment. You can always upgrade to more expensive and fancy hooks later on. Truthfully I’ve been using the same plain Jane set of aluminum hooks for many years although there are many fancy wooden, bamboo, and other types of hooks out there. I just like my hooks and don’t feel the need to upgrade them, but that is up to you. You’ll know when you are ready to buy new hooks or try out a different style.

    Crochet Hooks

Crochet hooks are pretty basic. They consist of the hook and handle. Most of them have an indentation in the center so that you can grip them better. They range in size from very small almost needle like steel hooks used for fine thread work to giant jumbo plastic hooks used to create rugs and other large projects. Right now I would recommend you start out with a set which ranges from size E to K. These can be readily found and are not very expensive.

Hook styles are either inline or tapered. I prefer tapered, but some of my fellow crochets friends swear by their inline hooks. Inline hooks have sharper more defined edges while tapered hooks are more curved. Either style is fine, try them both and see which one you prefer.

    Holding the Hook

How you hold your crochet hook is really a matter of preference. I use the pencil hold, but several people I know use the knife hold. Either one is acceptable and you may come up with your own way of holding the hook. As long as your stitches come out correctly and you are not straining your hands hold your hook how it is most comfortable for you.
