Murder Row (A Private Detective Mystery Series of crime mystery novels Book 1 ) - B.A. Savage
Chapter 1
It was Monday June 15th. It's a warm day in Central City. I’ve spent extended hours sitting in my truck watching cheating spouses and freezing my ass off; I’m glad to see spring. I'd drunk my second cup of coffee when the phone rang.
Hello!
I smiled.
Randall it's me.
Jennifer whispered. You are busy today?
*
I’m looking for a client. I believe the only time people are dreadful is in the winter,
I suggested.
When the weather’s injurious their partner can get out and follow them,
she teased.
I know that’s why they hire me. However, as soon as it gets warm the private work turns to crap.
Your life isn’t that bad lover.
She assured me.
I haven’t had a client in a week. Can I come over tonight? I need someone to hold me.
Come home. Maybe a kiss would make you feel better.
Make it ten kisses and you got a deal,
I smiled.
You’re an idiot,
she teased.
But you still love me don’t you?
Yes, crazy. Are you really coming over?
I’ll tell you what. If I’m free, I’ll be there at eight.
I’ll take two T-bone steaks out. Can you stop and get two salads, Randall?
Yes. And I’ll pick up some wine.
Okay! I’ll see you at eight.
The door opened and a big man walked in.
Are you Randall Stone?
Somebody came in, Randall?
Jennifer said.
Jennifer, I'll call you back.
You got a client?
I don’t know, yet.
Are you Randall Stone the Private Investigator?
he asked.
Are you looking for a Private Investigator?
I certainly am.
Is everything alright, Randall?
she asked.
I got to go. I’ll see you tonight.
Okay, honey. Bye.
Please come in and have a seat. You want some coffee?
Yes. Coffee will be fine. My name is Ryan Black.
Would you like sugar with your coffee Mr. Black?
Yes. Thank you.
What can I do for you?
It’s very simple.
Keep talking.
I was having financial problems and headed for prison. I have a wife and three boys.
You also have a life insurance policy.
Yes! If something happens to me, my family will be taken care of.
You said you were heading to prison?
Mr. Stone, I was a bookkeeper and embezzled money from some people.
You can get some serious time for embezzlement.
Yes, so I decided to kill myself. I left instructions for my wife to pay back the stolen money, and she could live quite comfortably on the rest.
But wouldn't suicide eliminates, the life insurance policy?
I asked.
Yes. So I went to see a guy I’ve known for years. His name is Derek.
Yes. I know him. He tried to kill me once.
I told Derek I wanted to hire him to kill me. Derek uttered he could take care of it for me, and I paid him ten thousand dollars. I asked Derek to find someone to do it, and I don’t want to know who they are.
So, what do you need me for?
Things have changed. My wife’s father heard about our problem. He advanced me enough money to pay back the people I stole the money from and to make a fresh start.
Then you need to tell Derek to call the heat off.
Have you read the morning paper, Mr. Stone?
No.
Mr. Derek Luke was murdered last night.
Well, it sounds like you are in a spot.
Yes. I need your help. I need you to find whoever; Derek Luke hired. And stop him from killing me.
You want me to find a man that the only person knows who he is dead? He could be one of the eighty professional killers living in Central City.
Do you think you can find him, Mr. Stone?
I don’t know. I will try.
You have to find him before he kills me.
Let me get the word out on the streets, and shake a few branches. In the meantime, you stay here and lock the doors.
You want me to stay in your office?
Yes. Don’t even let your family know where you are. Mr. Black this is very important; they could have your phone tapped. Don’t tell anybody where you are.
Okay. If you think it’s necessary.
Yes! Do you have any cash on you?
Yes, I have money.
I charge four hundred dollars a day and expenses.
I guess his father-in-law gave him enough money for a high-priced private eye. He handed me three thousand dollars and agreed to lock the door and only answer it for me. I closed the curtain, switched off the television and repeated what I told him about contacting anyone. I left the office and drove to Wilson Street where Derek Luke had
