      Introduction

      We humans are complex beings, marked by a mass of contradictions and extremes. On the one hand we display courage, compassion, generosity and other noble and highly-valued qualities. And on the other hand, we have negative traits such as greed, spite, hatred, suspicion...

      Jealousy features high on the latter list. It is an emotion with which most of us are familiar, though few care to admit it. It is most often viewed as being very destructive, particularly to the one who harbours it.

      Jealousy has been responsible for many crimes and acts of war, yet it continues to fascinate us, perhaps in the way that shipwrecks, car crashes and natural disasters do.

      This book has lots of quotations from a wide range of figures, past and present, about jealousy in its various guises. They include philosophers, poets, psychologists,

      politicians and actors. A few even see ‘the green-eyed monster’ in a favourable light. What they all have to say on the subject enables us to think and reflect on ourselves and our own attitudes to others.
