Chapter 1 - From Essential Oils to Base Oils: The Power of Natural Healing via Aromatherapy

The origin of the term aromatherapy and the beginnings of the legendary healing efficacy of essential oils are literally ages apart. Terminology-wise, aromatherapy is a concoction of the modern world, particularly among Europeans during the early 20th century. The French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé published the first book that mentioned aromathérapie to describe how he successfully treated a serious burn injury with the use of lavender oil, an essential oil. In contrast, the application of essential oil for healing is as old as time. Essential oils hold the distinction as mankind’s first medicines.

There were historical and biblical accounts of how essential oils were used during the ancient times. These references include Egyptian hieroglyphs and hundred of references in the bible. God himself figured prominently in the biblical references. Particularly, one of the first step-by-step instructional guides for the preparation of anointing oil from known essential oils of the modern world was attributed to God.

It is the position of this book that the efficacy of any medicine that weathered the test of time, over two centuries at that, cannot be questioned. Notwithstanding criticisms that the therapeutic effects of essential oils have no basis, 2,000 years of unrecorded but successful results cannot be dismissed. The tradition of using essential oils as home remedies for common minor afflictions would not have been propagated through word-of-mouth if its vaunted effects were all folkloric hype.

The reintroduction of the healing effects of essential oils in the early 1900s was spearheaded by learned men in the person of European scientists. Knowing how rigid men of science are in adhering to the scientific method of inquiry fanned the flames of interest in this author’s heart to write a book that compiled the natural healing power of essential oils. These super oils may be ancient in origin, but have you ever wondered why people then enjoyed longevity more than the modern man who has synthetic pharmaceuticals in his medicine cabinet?

This powerhouse of a book puts the ability to heal in your hands. I have been a fan of Aromatherapy for years - and I am very glad to add this book to my collection. In fact, I tried one of the recipes immediately and got a great result!

A brief and helpful review of the history and types of essential oils used for healing and aromatherapy. This book gives how tos on creating your own mixes of oils with different base oils. The book also details how to create mixes of oils for specific ailments. I used to be skeptical, but started using a diffuser with essential oils in my classroom and this is the first year I have not been sick. Every other year I had bronchitis, laryngitis, and colds several times each school year. I have purchased my oils and diffuser from Doterra; however, this book details less expensive ways to create the oils yourself. I would have liked some information on where and how to purchase the proper oils and how to know if they are good quality. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I've been using essential oils for several years, but almost exclusively with a diffuser. This book introduced me to the benefits of direct application. I especially appreciated the information on base oils and how to choose one. The author focuses on a what she considers a basic medicine chest of essential oils, which is especially nice for beginners who might be overwhelmed by the number of available oils from which to choose. I read the Kindle version and the recipe section was difficult to follow because of formatting issues. The table of contents for the first two chapters was helpful for looking up certain ailments and complaints, but that level of detail is missing for the rest of the book. However, after a bit of tweaking I think this title will be worth a look, especially by those new to aromatherapy.

A great informative book regarding essential oils. I had little knowledge of aromatherapy prior to reading this book and I am glad I was give the chance to review this from Librarything. It gives the reader the chance to heal thy self.Recommended.
