      It was 7 o’clock the evening and Karen were in the kitchen popping popcorn. Susan was on her cell phone talk to her boyfriend. Victor, Alice, and Tony were in the living room, showing French the latest dance moves and French were doing his best to keep up.

      Girl, I just had a call from Sam. He wants to speak with you. He said it was very important. I think he’s in jail.

      Sam Moss was a scum bag. He ran into Karen and Susan nine years ago in a bar on Martin Luther King Street in Louisville, Kentucky. He was charming, very kind, and swept Karen off her feet. Two months later, they were living together. In one-year Karen was pregnant with Alice. Alice was the most wonderful thing that ever happened in Karen’s life, but Sam was the worst. In the next year, Sam had two more children with two different women. Karen, who was still in love, forgave him, but one month later, she came home to find Sam had moved out. He'd taken all her furniture and empty the bank account. Since that day, she had talked to him once on the day before Alice’s birthday. He promised to pick her up to the next day and spend the day with her but never showed up. Susan tried to call him, but he had changed his phone number. And now he calls her, wanting her help. Karen took the phone from her sister and stepped out on the back porch.
