The Poetry Of Hell
()
About this ebook
It is often said that two things are unavoidable; Death and Taxes. Certainly the latter is a common thorn in adult life but as to the former it seems that for many people it is merely a hiccup in Life’s eternal journey. A journey they wish, if being of good deed and character, to share at the eternity of Heaven’s largesse, a reward for Faith and the obligations of Religion. Of course for those not so fortunate an altogether different experience was prepared for them; Hell. Its nightmare visions so terrifying conjured up by Dante and Milton. Here we have gathered together verse by such luminaries as William Blake, Gerald Manley Hopkins, John Milton, Ben Jonson, Rupert Brooke and of course many others to share their thoughts and vision.
William Blake
William Blake was born in London in 1757. He was apprenticed to a master engraver and then studied at the Royal Academy under the guidance of Joshua Reynolds. In 1789 he engraved and published Songs of Innocence and the contrasting Songs of Experience came later in 1794. A poet, painter and printmaker of great originality and imagination, his work was largely unrecognized during his lifetime and he struggled to make a living. Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. He died in 1827.

Hades by Robert C O Benjamon
Darkest clouds of blackest Hades,
Whirling onward into space;
Full of forms of ghostly horrors,
Madly join the phantom chase.
Earth below is lost in darkness,
Waves like mountains strike the sky,
Whilst the lurid lightning flashes,
And lost spirits shriek and cry.
Ne'er on earth was such dread darkness,
Ne'er such horrors, ghostly forms;
Ne'er such strokes of sulphurous lightning,
Ne'er such hellish terror storms.
And each vaporous home of thunder
Changed to aspect yet more dark;
And their crashing loud artillery
Followed close the 'lectric spark.
And each cloud with spirits damning,
Teemed till mountains filled their spheres,
And their hideous, ghostly laughter
Seemed devoid of hope and fears.
And their aspect seemed unnatural,
Devilish was their face and form;
Peals of shrieking, ghostly laughter
Quick increased, as did the storm.
Then that ghostly throng of spirits,
Each with death's marks on its brow,
Danced and kept tune to the thunders,
To the lightning's lurid glow.
Hark! the thunder crashes louder,
'Tis the ghostly spirits' band;
But above the deafening echoes
Are the curses of the damned.
Shuddering I, the scene beholding,
Felt my breast with horror swell;
For along the clouds in fire,
It was written - 'This is Hell!'
In Purgatory by John Bannister Tabb
'His sins were long ago forgiven;
So let him pass
at once
to heaven.'
Poe’s Purgatory by John Bannister Tabb
All others rest; but I
Dream-haunted lie-
A distant roar,
As of tumultuous waters, evermore
About my brain.
E'en Sleep, tho' fain
To soothe me, flies affrighted, and alone
I bear the incumbent stone
Of Death
That stifles breath,
But not the hideous chorus crying 'Shame!'
Upon my name.
Had I not Song?
Yea; and it lingers yet
The souls to fret
Of an ignoble throng,
Aflame with hate
Of the exulting Fate
That hurls their idols from her temple fair,
And shrines me there.
Christ’s Descent Into Purgatory, By Giorgione, At Venice by Richard Monckton Milnes Houghton
The saving work for man is finishèd,
The kingdoms of the Earth and Air o'erthrown;
So now hath Christ come down among the dead,
Spoiling the Spoiler, to redeem his own.
What blessèd glory plays about that head
For those who here in fiery bondage groan,
Conscious their suffering never could atone
For Sin, till He that once had sufferèd.
And, lo! in patient melancholy state
The synod of the Patriarchs rests apart
Condemned, tho' sons of God by faith, to wait
In this dark place and solitude of heart,
Joyless and tearless, till this Christ should come
To bear them to their Father and their Home.
Love In Hades by Robert Crawford
I saw Love pass with Charon down
The pale infernal tide,
To visit in the starless town
All who for him had died.
The gay God and the old Ghost came
Slow to that sleepy shore,
And a dead passion burned like flame
Before each true-love's door!
Into
