GROWING grapes in pots is interesting from the points of view of novelty and of the test of cultural skill involved. It has certain advantages to recommend it, and in some cases it meets a necessity. Pot-grown grapes are serviceable for early forcing, because continuous forcing of established vines planted out in a border soon wears them out. Vines which are grown in pots can be thrown away as soon as they have done fruiting, and others grown on to take their place without injuring the permanent vines.
EARLY FORCING
We have regularly ripened grapes in March from vines in pots, which have been struck from eyes
the previous January. It requires a great amount of heat to do this, and may be more easily done by growing the vines from eyes
which were struck two years previously. We had to grow the plants in a very high temperature, trained over the walk in a pine stove, and also fruit them in the same position. It is possible to produce good grapes from vines in pots where the soil is unsuitable for vines planted out, or where there is no convenience for making a vine border. In many amateurs’ greenhouses and conservatories, where it would be inconvenient to grow permanent vines, quite useful crops of grapes may be successfully grown in pots. They are frequently grown thus during the period of waiting for a new vinery to become established and prolific. The young rods may be left from six to seven feet long. If any pruning be required it is best to leave them outdoors in a sheltered position for two or three weeks after the pruning, to prevent them bleeding. If the
