      INTRODUCTION

      When I started researching Loudoun County: A Family Album, I had no idea how eager people would be to share photographs of their friends and families. I was astounded at how many pictures people have of everyday life from the 1880s through the 1940s. Not only were they willing to share the photos, but they offered wonderful stories about what was going on in the images. I had a lot of fun listening to people’s memories and seeing people and places that I had never seen. Very few of the photos have ever been in print before; others have been printed singularly but not as a collection. I am extremely thankful to everyone who spent the time, effort, and energy to share their treasured memories with me.

      As one can imagine, it was very difficult to choose two hundred images from among the many hundreds that were offered. It is my hope and wish that everyone who has family photographs preserve them as best they can and document any information about them. Even the sharpest of memories fade with time, and there were some group photographs where only a few members could be positively identified.

      Most of the images in this book are amateur shots taken with the family camera. Within the pages that follow I hope you get a glimpse of a Loudoun that you may not have seen before. The identities of the people and places in the photos appear as they were related to me. I hope I have done them justice, and that you have as much fun looking through them as I did collecting them.

      At the beginning of the Civil War, small change was scarce, and people were hoarding metal money. To alleviate the situation the General Assembly of 1861–1862 authorized all cities and towns in Virginia containing a population of at least 2,000 and the towns of Leesburg, Lewisburg, and Warrenton to issue small notes as currency. On May 31, 1861, the Leesburg Town Council authorized Mayor John M. Orr to issue small notes of the corporation to the amount of $5,000. Those notes were signed, numbered, and registered by the mayor and were made payable to the bearer in funds on presentation at the mayor’s office in sums of $5. They were issued in the following denominations: 12¢, 25¢, 50¢, and $1. The money received in exchange for the said notes was deposited with the treasurer of the corporation and retained especially for the redemption of these notes. J.H. Chamblin, Geo. K. Fox Jr., and Jos. Birkby were authorized to sign the notes for the mayor. The notes (nicknamed Dog Money by the citizens) were printed by the Washingtonian, a local newspaper, on several different types of paper: plain white, ruled white, blue, ruled blue, and linen.

      THE JOE FRANCIS COLLECTION

      Joseph Andrew Francis was born at Ashburn Farm in Ashburn, Virginia, on August 29, 1915, to Joseph A. Francis and Annie E. Green. On July 12, 1941, he married Lois Pickins Walker, and they had one child, a daughter, Jo Ann. Joseph was employed by the Washington Times Herald newspaper and was also a photographer in the Navy during World War II and afterwards at the U.S. Geological Survey for 30 years. A collector of antiques, he enjoyed and regularly attended area auction sales accompanied by his buddy, a Doberman pinscher named Bullet. The Francis home, which is still standing, is located at 27
