About this ebook

BUSHWHACKER QUEEN
HELL has no fury like a woman betrayed

Big Tobe Kirkwood was king of the Southern bushwhackers in the Great Smoky Mountains, leading a ragtag army of killers and bandits armed with stolen Yankee repeating rifles.

Hattie June Rose was his backwoods queen, Civil War guerilla royalty terrorizing the dark mountain region. She offered herself to gain Big Tobe’s strength in avenging her father.

Bloodier than Quantrill

Fast and lively and very bloody, Rebel Bushwhacker hits hard and aims for the head, like a smoking revolver in the hands of the wild-eyed bushwhacker chieftain.

Based on true incidents during the War Between the States, the story takes place in the rugged Southern Appalachians where a deadly civil war raged between Rebel partisans and Union loyalists.

It’s the story of a survivor, a sturdy mountain girl named HATTIE JUNE ROSE, who found herself in desperate times during the last year of the Civil War in the remote Smoky Mountain backwoods. Guerillas fought a grim and shadowy war, with brazen raiding, murders, kidnapping and looting quite common.

It’s a tangled story of love and hate, of vengeance sought, of a clever country girl who uses her brains and her body to bend two different men to her will.

She loses her innocence along the way, and at a tender age buries her father and her brother. She trades sex and her native intelligence to the most notorious bushwhacker of them all, the “red-headed butcher,”, for his help in tracking down the Yankees who killed her father.

Til the day her murderous lover betrayed her badly.

Vengeful Hattie June Rose sets Big Tobe up for an ambush that goes badly. He flees to Texas and, after recovering from her wounds, she follows, determined to see his death - or her own.

Wally Avett

Wally Avett is a semi-retired realtor in the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. He lives in the same little town, sometimes compared to Mayberry, where he was editor and chief writer in the 1970s for the weekly newspaper. These days he writes a column, the Hillbilly Ranger, for the hundred-year-old Cherokee Scout newspaper at Murphy. Avett's first novel, Murder in Caney Fork, was published by Bell Bridge Books, 2014.

Being from Georgia, I am drawn to Georgia stories. Rebel Bushwhacker grabbed me from the get-go simply because no one writes about what happened to the rural folks after the war. Right after Appomattox, during reconstruction, people would not let go of the hatred; starvation, looting, etc. were rampant. Heck, to this day conversations include ‘Rebels’ and ‘Yankees;’ it seems it will always be. Hattie June Rose is a spitfire who devises a plan, using all her womanly wiles, to do what has to be done. She pays the price in more ways than one, but her determination to see it through takes you on one adventure after another in blood, sweat and lots of tears.

Wally Avett is a grand storyteller. I have read all his works so far: Last Bigfoot in Dixie and Murder in Caney Fork. Excellent entertainment. I highly recommend all of them.
