Descrizione

Samantha Bloodworth is still stationed at McMurdo, Antarctica, waiting for her next writing assignment. She smells a fun story being cooked up when some of the guys from the motor pool challenge the neighboring New Zealanders’ to a chili cook-off, with a group of Korean pilots as the judges.

Just as the first batch of chili is being judged, an explosion occurs near the party. Burning debris rains down on the party goers. The volcano that looms over McMurdo has chosen this unfortunate time to lob some lava bombs.

The commander of McMurdo orders everyone over to the New Zealanders’ base on the other side of the hill. For three days, the Americans, the New Zealanders and the Koreans are jammed into the smaller space. The taunting that had started during the cook-off continues and tempers flare. Initially, a winner was to have been crowned during the cook-off, but soon Samantha just hopes that everyone can survive the ordeal of living in a sardine can.

The Right Ingredients

Seriously? That’s your secret ingredient? I asked.

Yes! And, you promised you wouldn’t tell anyone.

I don’t think you have anything to worry about there. Besides, no one would believe me.

I sat on a tall metal stool in the corner, sipping the most delicious coffee I had tasted in months. Grateful to be given this delectable libation, I kept quiet while Willy Ropata Martindale shared with me his secrets for making world-class chili.

I’m telling you, my love, you won’t taste anything better than Willy’s Forget-Me-Not Chili.

That’s what you call it? I laughed.

I made it up, just now! You like it?

Absolutely.

We both laughed enjoying the spontaneity of the moment. Willy had a huge pot of chili cooking on the stove, and spread about on the counters of the kitchen were containers of oregano and cumin and chili powder. Willy looked over his shoulder, to see if anyone else was coming into the kitchen. However, it was just he and I. No one else was in the kitchen, and we could not hear anyone coming down the hallway either.

You keeping an eye out for spies?

Maybe.

He slung a metal bowl filled with some green glop onto the counter and pulled up a stool to work next to me.

Seriously? I asked him as I wrinkled up my nose. You are going to do that right next to me?

Willy nodded his head slowly then asked, You want the full experience, don’t you?

No actually, I don’t. I’d be happy just hearing about it from you. Reporting on something doesn’t necessarily mean I have to be right in the middle of things.

Uh huh, Willy said. That’s not what I have heard about you, Miss Samantha.

He grasped a piece of slimy green weed and snapped it between his fingers, stripping off small globules that he dropped back into a white ceramic bowl he had retrieved and also placed on the counter. They sounded for all the world like tiny eyeballs, plopping into the juice.

Fess up Willy. What have you heard?

He didn’t answer, but he kept
