    Priest Namdev

I see him daily in the mid of the great river, the deviant. I never have the guts to actually go forward and ask his name. Those well-built muscles and something in that dark gait speaks about the danger and power he has around him.

Being the priest of the evening ritual, which happens on the river daily, it is hard to ignore the person emerging from the middle of the river, that too, in the evening, when everyone is wrapped up in thick shawls and trying to keep the cold at bay. This man is entirely different from the rest of the crowd. Shimla is not a city to be taken lightly, especially when the Diwali festival is around and people from all over the world are pouring into the city to watch the celebrations and then too, it is so freezing outside.

With the plate of lightning and sweets in my hand and applying the red kumkum on every devotee’s forehead and blessing them, I turn to the last person. As usual, it is the man with his bare chest and loincloth around his hips. Smiling and placing sweets in his hands, I ask him,

Child, I see you every day taking your routinely morning and evening dip in the holy river. Don’t you feel freezing in that icy-cold water?

Smiling, as if I have asked a bizarre question, he says, I am praying for someone’s return, sir. I hope, with the blessing of dear Shiva, the person will come home soon.

Indeed, he says, Whoever the person is, he or she will come back.

    Marina

    "Dear dad,

I know the step I am taking right now is something on which I should have thought before but, like always, your quick decision in my life made my mind in a rush. I am going, dad. As far as my mind and body can take me...., away from you and mum, away from your fake pleasantries and hypocritical society, where you have bred me and where I have never felt like a part of it.

I am going somewhere where you cannot find me. Anywhere to find peace of mind,
