    Mystery Tales - Paul Sheets

    Introduction

SOME people love to just lay back with a great book of mysterious stories and have their bones shaken everywhere. Others just prefer a good read.

I prefer both. Here we have in these strange pages a collection of five of my top selling stories that will leave you wanting more. We start out with story about a Witches Lair and how the poor girls just can’t seem to get rid of their guest.

Then we will mosey on over to a truly great guy who just loves to collect human parts, even if he has to kill to get them. Of course our next tale will bring you in touch with the spiritual world. My long dead Indian buddies will take you to their world, if you’ll let them. See what happened to the poor people of that nice little town the shadow warriors attacked.

We will then travel next to a small town that seems to have a demon that doesn’t want to go. Last we’ll meet my old friend Karen who just loves her garden so much, she feeds people to it. Come inside on a journey through the labyrinth of my mind and read a few great stories that came from it.

    Story One

    War of The Lair

JEB Perkins was a simple kind of guy who came to town not long ago, everyone loved him, and he always had a smile on his face. No one really knew much about him, or where he came from. He opened a General Store in their town to supply everyone’s needs. If the town’s people who knew him really knew who he was, and what he was, they’d have revolted against him.

Standing only 56 tall, and sometimes walking with a limp (although he really didn’t have leg problems), he always smiled a lot and greeted people with a hardy Good morning neighbor; how are you today? he wore an old pair of overalls all the time.

A very handsome guy with jet black hair and deep set blue eyes he was someone to look at. Wearing a strange looking necklace of a Jackals head with rubies for eyes.

When he first came to town he asked where the Witches Lair was, it was as if he already knew what he was looking for. Talking to people around town he’d heard it was the old mansion, outside of town. Meeting with Miriam Reynolds the real estate saleslady, he’d made an appointment to go view the mansion.

Miriam tried to talk Mr. Perkins out of looking at the place, because she said, it has such a low price Mr. Perkins but believe me you wouldn’t want it. It’s haunted by four sisters who are powerful witches. That’s why it’s called Witches Lair", it was given that name by a commanding officer of the Union forces that tried to destroy it, but they couldn’t. He lost hundreds of men trying to take that house.

It’s definitely haunted, you see anyone who has purchased the house disappeared, or simply ran off, and people have even been found dead in its attic.

Please Mr. Perkins let me show you one of my nicer homes. You’ll love them much more than that old place. Miriam Said.

Haunted; he said, that’s excellent, this should prove to be a great adventure. Mr. Perkins said. After arriving and looking at the outside, Miriam took him inside to show him what the interior looked like.

It comes with all the furnishings that are here now, no one wants anyone them out of fear. As he toured the old place he noticed the pentagram painted into the living room floor. There were satanic symbols all around the outside circle of it. It was a large living room with an old fireplace and had a lot of old furniture in it.

Really Mr. Perkins please let me show you something else in my listings, Miriam said.

No! I like this one just as it is, I think I’ll take it. Perkins replied, laughing as cold breezes hit him and strange creaking and moaning sounds occurred while he was touring it.

    Miriam was growing scared!

It is just the wind; all these old places make noises like that.

Are you absolutely sure you want this house Mr. Perkins? Miriam asked.

I love this place with all the grand old antiques, and the creepy noises, let’s see the rest, Perkins was excited and wanted to keep going.

Touring the rest of the house they headed up the stairs to the attic door, but it was locked up tight.

Why is this door locked? Mr. Perkins inquired.

It was locked up by the police a long time ago, when the last owners were found dead up here, it was a shame, they were a nice couple and their little girl was so sweet, Miriam said.

Murdered, how were they murdered, Miriam?

They all seemed to have been frightened to death, Mr. Perkins

Such a shame, let’s get the paperwork done so I can move in as soon as possible, Perkins said.

They headed downstairs and back to Miriam’s car. Getting the paperwork for the old house and reading it to Mr. Perkins, he then gave her a check for the house.

Mr. Perkins left Miriam’s car and was heading to his own, when he suddenly spotted a face of a woman staring down at him from the attic window. Perkins just smiled and stared at her for a few seconds and then she disappeared.

Mr. Perkins arrived at his store and went directly to his living area in the backroom. He began packing and thinking about Witches Lair. All that week people didn’t see much of him since he was so busy packing and bringing everything he would need in case of any emergencies to his new house.

He decided he was going to turn the large living area into a warehouse for his store’s supplies, running around his store he packed everything he needed into his old box truck that he owned. Once he had everything loaded up, he headed for his old mansion.

When he arrived and started unloading everything at the house it was just beginning to get dark outside, looking up at the attic window he was surprised, at what he saw. Now, instead of just one woman looking at him, there were four women’s faces looking out.

This is going to be a real adventure, Perkins said to himself while unpacking his truck. Looking up a few seconds later, all four women were gone. No faces looking down from the old attic window.

There were no lights in the house because the electricity hadn’t been hooked up yet, so the first thing Mr. Perkins did was to unpack his oil lamps. Lighting four of them, he finished unpacking his truck by placing everything in the front hallway area, next to the living room. After everything was totally unloaded he placed the oil lamps in four different locations of the living room.

Sitting down in the living room chair he began eating a sandwich he’d brought from the store. Drinking some coffee from his thermos he noticed a shadow coming down the stairs. It attacked all of the boxes he had sat in the front lobby, throwing them around everywhere. The shadow then went running upstairs slamming the attic behind it.

If that’s all you ladies have, I’ll never leave this place, Perkins said, as he laughed out loud.

There was moaning, groaning, and singing with satanic chants all during the night, but Perkins was sound asleep in his chair. When dawn came, Mr. Perkins began to unpack all of his things placing them where he wanted everything to go.

He then climbed into his truck and headed for his general store. During the late afternoon, Miriam Reynolds the real estate lady brought Perkins his copies of the purchase agreement and bill of sale (warranty deed) for the house-they were already filed with the county clerk showing Mr. Perkins as the new owner.

Did everything go alright last night? Has anything strange happened yet? Miriam inquired of Perkins.

No, I had a very quiet and rest full night, nothing at all occurred. Mr. Perkins said.

By the way, I took the liberty of having the electric company and the gas companies go and hook you up. Hope you don’t mind? Reynolds said.

No! Mrs. Reynolds, thank you for your kindness. Mr. Perkins said as he went back to waiting on a customer.

He hurried home after the store closed so he could see if the lights really were working or not. As he arrived at the house the ladies were all staring at him through the attic window again.

Ignoring them, he rushed into the house trying every light switch in the front lobby area, and the first floor, they all worked and the house was once again full of light from the hanging chandeliers and wall lights.

He headed into the kitchen where he lit every pilot light on his stove and then hurried down the basement stairs to light the pilot on his water heater. Looking around the basement area there were all sorts of old antique things strewn about the place. Something up against the South wall caught his attention. There were a lot of square objects that looked like picture frames of various sizes stacked against the wall, all covered up.

I’ll go through those things some other time, time for dinner and some hot tea, Perkins said as he started up the stairs.

He started unpacking his tea kettle and tea. Hearing thumping sounds in the upstairs area, he totally ignored it. Then he went into the living room where he sat in the chair he’d used the night before.

Sipping his tea and eating some sandwiches he noticed something different hanging on the wall. Getting up and walking over to it he saw that it was a painting of four pretty young ladies sitting on a sofa in the same living room he was now standing in.

They were all wearing dresses like those worn

during the civil war, and all of them were wearing the same type of necklace. Their necklaces had a medallion on it of a devils head with horns.

Now where did that come from? It wasn’t there last night when I was in here, Perkins said.

Getting tired he went upstairs to the master bedroom. It smelled musky, but Perkins didn’t seem to care. The bedroom consisted of a large closet, fireplace, huge four post bed, a dresser with an old round mirror, one night stand, and a table. There was a large painting on the wall over
