Descrizione

This handy little guide gives you everything you need to know about the basics of playing golf. It’ll help you improve your game off the tee, on the fairways and on the greens. It’s not meant to be a complete coaching course. Rather, it offers a range of tips and techniques for you to try out. For that’s the weird thing about the game of golf. There’s no right or wrong way to swing or grip your club, no right stance to take or way to position your ball. What works for one player (infuriatingly) probably won’t work for another. We can’t promise you’ll end up a Tiger (actually, you probably don’t want to be a Tiger), a Rory or a Phil, but we can promise that you’ll think about your game a little differently and as a result improve. Happy swinging!

Hitting it in the right direction.

Start by making sure you feel comfortable over the ball – that means feeling balanced. So take up your stance and then swing your arms around. Are your feet in control of your body? Now the golden rule (though there are no golden rules in golf as you’ll find out!) is that the face of the club should be pointed at the target unless you’re trying to play a hook or slice the ball. Watch a pro when he’s about to take a shot. Pros tend to place the club on the ground before taking their stance. Try it yourself. Now the club should be square to your body – wherever you are in your backswing. Try stopping your club at a variety of positions in your swing to see where the head of the club is in relation to your body. For the greatest chance of playing an accurate shot the club head should be square to your body at all times. You can practice this at the driving range with a ball but also in your back garden (without a ball) – just halt your swing and check the club head position.

Get a grip

It might sound obvious but if you’re not holding the club properly your game will suffer. All golfers, whether beginners or experienced players of the game, need to examine their grip regularly. Try this exercise. Stand still and let your arms hang by your sides. Now put any club you choose into your left hand so its sits comfortably. Put your right hand out as if you’re going to shake hands with a friend and then place it on the club handle below your left hand. Your elbows and shoulders need to be relaxed and your grip on the club should be firm but not tight. The perfect club grip has been likened to holding a small bird in – you need to hold tightly enough to ensure it doesn’t fly away but loosely enough not to squeeze the life out of it. If you’ve never held a small bird imagine holding a toddler’s hand: that’s about the right strength to use. The tighter you hold the club, the more likely it is your swing will break down somewhere along the way.
