What is Social Anxiety Disorder?
Everyone at some time or another, experiences a bit of anxiety or fear in a social situation.
Speaking in front of a group, meeting new people or someone you really need to impress, being alone in a new place, are all situations where people might feel nervous or frightened. This is perfectly normal.
But for some people being afraid or anxious in social situations goes way beyond the norm, to the point where it interferes with daily functioning or, in severe cases, becomes totally debilitating.
This is what is known as social anxiety disorder.
What is Social Anxiety Disorder?
Social anxiety disorder, sometimes also called social phobia, is a psychological term used to describe a set of behaviors that stem from a person’s experiencing fear, anxiety, embarrassment, humiliation or other negative emotion when in a social situation.
Sometimes it’s just a single situation that invokes this anxiety in a person. For other people, it can be any situation in which they are in the presence of others. These fears are excessive and unreasonable, and are usually based on false beliefs.
People experiencing society anxiety disorder are often extremely self-conscious, and believe that people are making assumptions or judgments about them that are simply not the case in reality. They believe that everyone is looking at them, and are being judgmental or critical of them for some perceived reason.
In extreme cases, paranoia is also present in the individual.
Some things that people with social anxiety disorder specifically fear is that they will do something wrong or make some mistake that will lead to them being embarrassed or humiliated in front of other people. This fear can be exacerbated if the person also possesses weak social skills in the first place.
These fears can lead to extreme distress, and case the person to avoid situations where this
