Decorated and/or decorator cupcakes may be the diminutive sibling of decorated cakes – but diminutive only describes their size. The decorated cupcake is a giant in the baking industry today. In some ways they have eclipsed the larger decorated cakes, not only appearing in block buster movies and on late-night cable TV, but taking a major role at weddings, birthday parties and corporate celebrations alike! 

Cake and cupcake decorating is really a modern-age (or industrial age) art form. Decorating large cakes for special events can really only be traced back, perhaps as far as the 17th century, when the grand noble houses of Europe would employ the village bakers to create elaborate constructions for their banquet tables, in order to wow any visiting gentry. It was not until the 19th century, when it became possible to really control the temperature of ones oven, along with the introduction of baking soda and baking powder, that the making and decorating of cakes of all sizes became more accessible to the ordinary cook. 

The cupcake has a less well established history than the cake. While there is no doubt that the cupcake has been around for, most likely, as long as the cake, not much has been written about their history. It may be because a cupcake is a very personal treat; something that was made quietly, on the home hearth, to share with one’s children and loved ones. The bite size delectable, while beloved by people in Europe and North America, has not been, until recent years, the type of baked good that struck people with awe and wonder, so their history, until recently has been in large part overlooked.
