Prologue
The Milky Way – Suzette Striker, the starship Embassy’s physician.
Earth, country, and self – those are the three things, in order, that we were taught in the academy. These are the things that are supposed to matter most to all of us here on the ship. As we approach and, hopefully, pass the planet Mars, I wanted to take a chance to sit down and clear my thoughts.
We are once again passing an area that previously resulted in us returning to Earth. We had found Major Stuart Cliff, a missing American astronaut. He was hurt and stranded on Mars after an earlier mission from NASA. Due to his rescue, we had to backtrack and return him to Earth – his home, his country, and to his former life. The last I heard, he had made a full recovery and is now fast becoming some sort of celebrity.
We here at the Embassy are back on track, though, trying to recapture the spirit we had several weeks ago when we first took off from Houston. So, with that in mind, let me explain my original point of serving Earth, country, and self.
Earth – the planet we live on is what we all represent as astronauts, space travelers, whatever you want to call us. The point here is that the chance of meeting aliens from outer space may be remote, but there is still a chance nonetheless. Who knows exactly how far we’ll reach or where we’ll end up – that all depends on how our mission progresses and of course, NASA.
Country – this is a little tricky, for sure. I am from Germany. Captain Maurice Ricardo is from Spain. Director Karpov, head of NASA, is from Russia. However, NASA is stationed in the United States of America. See the confusion and weirdness of having to honor your country? I have no problem saying that I represent Germany, but someone else would say they represent their nation just as proudly. That’s okay, since that’s the way it should be. However, politics take over and things get complicated. This is why I say it can be tricky. No one country is better than the other. We try, and should try, to come together for the good of the mission. That is, the planet’s mission.
Self – promoting one’s glory and accomplishments is not encouraged by NASA, and it’s also something that the captain has spoken to us about in the past. It is fine to receive accolades and have others boast of your skills, but self-promoting is not encouraged. I understand this, because I truly believe humility is important, especially when surrounded by so many great people. The focus is to do your very best, work well with others, and remember that the mission, for the greater good, always comes first.
One of the perks of being an officer is that my living quarters has a window. I am looking out and can see the planet Mars. It is an awesome view, but reminds me of how we were just here not too long ago. I trust that we can pass it by without any situation arising. It
