About this ebook

Retrash is the result of a 3 year collaboration with 82 artists and designers from 20 countries around the world.
Retrash will inspire you with creative and innovative ideas on reusing second hand materials. The printed version of the book is a recycled piece of art itself as it is printed on 100% recycled paper.
Retrash represents a small part of the solution to our growing problem of waste, which is to reduce the demand for new materials by reusing existing materials. If we can reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill and in our oceans, we can also reduce the need for sourcing new materials through deforestation and mining.

Retrash - Upcycle Repurpose Reuse Recycle - Nathan Devine

    Foreword – Retrash Founder

I love being inspired by what others are creating around the world, and the way they find beauty in whatever materials they use.

I started the Retrash.com website with the single intention of showing the most beautiful and innovative ideas for upcycling and reusing second hand materials. I have been humbled by the number of people, from all walks of life and from countries all around the world, who have supported Retrash along the way.

This book represents a small part of the solution to our growing problem of waste, which is to reduce the demand for new materials by reusing existing materials. If we can reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill and in our oceans, we can also reduce the need for sourcing new materials through deforestation and mining.

To all of you who have contributed such inspiring ideas, I thank you for making Retrash what it is today. This book has given me the opportunity to meet some of the most creative and generous individuals that I have ever met.

It has been my passion for the last four years to promote recycling and upcycling innovations to the world and I look forward to continuing on this journey.

I truly believe that this book and the incredible people behind it can inspire us all to see waste differently by opening our minds to more creative and practical solutions.

    I hope you enjoy it.

    Foreword – Etsy

Etsy’s mission is to reimagine commerce to build a more lasting and fulfilling world.

Etsy is the marketplace we make together, where creative entrepreneurs from around the world connect directly with buyers to share a story of craftsmanship. We hope to use our platform to replace the empty mass consumption that has come to define modern commerce with mindful and connected purchasing, and to turn wasteful pipelines into closed loops.

In recognition of the vast ecological problems threatening our livelihoods and ways of life, it is our responsibility to reverse the impact human activity has had on the planet. People and planet are inextricably linked to business, and we have the opportunity to enjoy the success of all three entities simultaneously. I can think of no more direct manifestation of this than upcycled, handmade goods.

The items in this book do more than save materials from being thrown out. Each crafted piece has a rich story: the inspiration and care brought by their creator, as well as the history of the materials themselves. Upcycled goods connect us to our environment and to the maker. They are also a means of connecting us to our history as artifacts from another era, revived to take on modern value.

From El Salvadoran coffee sacks to disassembled San Franciscan electronics, each of these items has a unique story. Upcycling materials shows consideration for finite resources, harkening back to times when people wasted nothing and made things with their hands.

We are often isolated from the ability in all of us to envision, to build with our hands, and to waste nothing. I hope this book serves to inspire readers to reconsider the potential for items that might otherwise be thrown away.

I am a fashion (re)designer. The difference between myself and other fashion designers is the concept of my label name, ‘(re)’: reuse, reduce, redesign, rethink, reinvent, recycle. My entire creative design process is unconventional from start to finish. I thrift for my materials instead of buying new fabric yardage and I marry wedding dresses with table runners and garters with suspenders. With no material off limits, inspiration can come from anything … creating truly extraordinary clothing.

... inspired by the beauty of my grandmother’s hand-stitched lace slips, I mainly work with soft feminine materials like lace and satin...

Upcycle it! By using pre-existing materials and creatively salvaged fabrics, I breathe new life into fashion otherwise destined for landfill. After all, the most eco-friendly fabrics are those that already exist. I am committed to creating a shift of consciousness by sourcing all second hand materials locally, using reclaimed sewing materials (even mannequins) and displaying my pieces with recycled tags and on salvaged clothing racks. I’m proud to be a designer who supports my local economy, who is keeping pounds of clothing from rotting in landfills and can say that I’ve created a business that essentially creates no new waste. This is why I not only create clothing but I teach people skills to reconstruct their own wardrobes and offer personalized wardrobe eco-consultations.

There is no need to buy new clothes. Everything you own can be redesigned. All you need are the skills to see old materials in a new light. I can help you do this. Whether you make a commitment to buy one (re) piece instead

of buying new or I give your closet an eco-make-over, YOU have the power to make a huge difference. (re) designing is a necessary component of living a sustainable lifestyle and a wildly adventurous way to honor and respect our world.

I took an unconventional path to a non-traditional career. I am not a fashion designer going eco; I am an environmental and social activist gone fashion designer. And rather than being a setback I believe it actually sets me apart. I thought I had to be behind a desk to be an activist, making phone calls, networking, writing my thesis, teaching at university. What I discovered is that a revolution of the heart can come from anywhere, including through the art of fashion.

(re) collections consist of (re) constructed clothing and accessories for sale in boutiques and available online, as well as one-of-a-kind custom made dresses for clients. Having been originally inspired by the beauty of my grandmother’s hand-stitched lace slips, I mainly work with soft feminine materials like lace and satin that come in the form of nightgowns, slips and lingerie. Mixing delicate fabrics with harsh bold lines and asymmetrical cuts brings out a bold, confident lioness. Blending these two opposites yet connecting energies into one, balances the wearer and (re) invigorates the synergy of the Earth.

(re) collections are composed of 100% upcycled pieces.

(re) shows a different and unique side of upcycling. Aimed at not only (re) transforming the material into something better but also inspiring a society that (re) thinks their choices as consumers.

(re) has been educating communities in Europe, Asia and the USA through wardrobe (re) design workshops which combine awareness of ethical fashion issues with (re) fashion exhibits.

(re) aims to bring upcycled fashion further into the mainstream and to propel the green movement forward through eye catching and popular means. Getting (re) pieces on the Red Carpet is Step #1.

Let’s change the world … one consumer at a time.
