Descrizione

Some people think that the best is in the past. No, the best is yet to come. As we look up to Jesus, the best is in the way. I can only know Jesus increasingly in the future. What I know of Him now is preparatory. I will certainly know and serve Him better in the future. My God is the God of the present and of the future. He will handle the past. He is handling the present and will handle the future. He has the best in store.

He says, “I know the plans I have for you.” These plans cannot be in the past. Plans are always for the future. His plans are those of welfare, to give you a future and an inheritance. Jesus is my future. He is your future. Let us look to Him and praise Him.

The contents of this book are a part of two teaching sessions in the church in Yaoundé; February 1983 and February 1986. The massages in the present form have been copied from cassette recordings.

PART ONE

CHAPTER ONE

1. THE AUTHOR AND FINISHER OF OUR FAITH

The Lord is at work both to will and to do His good pleasure. He is at work in you - do you believe it? Some people want to see before believing. The Lord however says blessed are those who believe without seeing. Some people want to sow the seed and harvest it there and then. I have been told of a banana that is grown, it grows and they eat on the spot. It is only in African magic that such is done. The Lord does not do magic. But He is surely at work in your life.

Tell the Lord, Lord, You are at work in my life. You are at work in a specific way in my life. Lord, You are not sleeping in my life. Have you not realized that you have made more progress than when you first started? You know the Lord better now than when you started. You are more mature than when you first started. You are more able now than when you first started. God has made you able. You are able in Him. You will not fail because it is impossible for God to fail.

The process may not be as fast as we want. But God is always on time. Be assured of this.

2. YOU WILL NOT FAIL!

You will not fail because Jesus cannot fail. There is a sense in which God is not worried about us because He has confidence in His Holy Spirit that resides in us. God has no worries about you and He has no worries about the church. The church must conform to the Head. And the members are conforming to the Head. There is a work in you that will guarantee that you conform fully to the Head. You will not fail!

God is not in for a joke in your life. The Lord Jesus says, No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day (John 6:44). It is the Father who drew you to Jesus. Did He do it because you asked Him to do so? At least I didn’t. He started on His own, and drew me to Jesus. He even knew me before drawing me to Jesus. After He started, will He change His mind? By the time He started, He had made up His mind to go through and He will go to the end. We shall all reach the perfection of the Father. We shall be ready for the Bridegroom.

3. TOGETHER WITH CHRIST

The Bible says, Even when we were dead through our trespasses, He made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved) (Ephesians 2:5). Is there a discouraged Christ? No! There is no discouraged Christ. You have been made alive together with Christ. Your life has been made one with Christ. You walk around, one with Christ.

You well remember the prophet who took his eyes off the Lord and became discouraged. If you take your eyes off Christ, you too will be discouraged. The pathway to discouragement is:

Take your eyes away from Jesus

Look at yourself

Look at your circumstances

Look at others

Speak the wrong language. The discouraged prophet spoke the wrong language. He said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am no better than my fathers (1 Kings19:4). Some say, I am a failure. As I look at my life, I just see failure. Such words are a prophecy and the people who use them become it. The Lord said, Let there be light, and there was light. When you say, I am a failure, then you fail. As a co-heir with Christ, your words create.

It is not possible to see a person who confesses the wrong things and yet enjoys the Christian life. Just listen to a person’s language and it tells you what his experience of life is. The negative tongue prays and then becomes what it has proclaimed. In a Christian meeting, some people may be enjoying what is going right, while the others concentrate on what is going wrong. Some people have a catalogue of the wrong things, which they memorise and keep adding to. They add their worst hopes to it and paint a dark picture for themselves, under whose weight they crumble.

Some people look at the church and keep a list of all those who are falling away from the faith or leaving. When one out of a hundred falls, they do not see the ninety-nine. They see the one. In fact, they make that one person so big that the ninety-nine look small. Or, one person may fall in one thing, and they make everything in that person into a failure. When they want to pray, the other person’s failures stand before their eyes, and they can pray no more. Someone told me that a certain sister was not walking with the Lord and that it made it difficult for him to pray. He was the problem, not the sister.

4. LOOKING TO JESUS

If you take your eyes off Jesus, you have made the first step towards discouragement and backsliding. Every discouraged person has backslidden. Discouragement is a sin. It took me some courage to put it this way because many people think that discouragement is a normal thing. No, it is a sin. It is the sin of taking the eyes off Jesus. Anyone who takes his eyes off Jesus has sinned.

The Bible says, Looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2). Each time I disobey that command by taking my eyes off Jesus, I sin. The Bible does not say, Looking up to yourself; to your successes, to your failures. It does not say, Looking up to the church, looking up to the world. The Apostle Paul said he did not even judge himself. I want you to come to the point in your walk with God where you settle it that each time you get your eyes off Jesus, you have sinned. Say it with me, Each time I stop looking up to Jesus, I commit a sin. Each time I look up to Jesus, I commit righteousness. I will always commit righteousness.

No one can be looking at Jesus and lack spiritual power. When people take their eyes off Jesus and set them on their feelings, compare themselves with others, see how much God has blessed the others more than He has done it for them, they sin. If they call the others God’s favourites, and examine how much better God has blessed them, they only demote themselves. Do not set your eyes on those whom God has blessed. Set them on Jesus. Do not set your eyes on those who speak in tongues. Fix them on Jesus. Note that there is no record that Jesus spoke in tongues.

I want you to commit yourself to look up to Jesus as your continual experience. Without it, you will have a Christian life that today is up, tomorrow is down. Many people are looking at how they feel. Some are looking at their past, at others and admire the way these others are serving the Lord. Actually, if you served the Lord like the other persons, you will be a terrible failure. You
