I was raised on a farm in Piedmont, NC where we raised cattle and, yes, tobacco. I used to give my father a really hard time about all the people we were killing. How was I to know that my parents keeping me out of the sun, because of heat stroke, would later cause me much severe pain. I have two daughters (three grandchildren) and a lovely wife that are all employed in the medical profession, except for the grandchildren. I have a master degree in engineering where I studied fluid flow and heat transfer. Some would call that rocket science, just kidding. I was employed in 'big industry' for eighteen years and sales to big industry for another twenty years and engineering inspections. I have recovered from severe back pain after two failed surgeries and recovered from severe sleep apnea and high blood pressure. It was through an unusual route that I discovered the nutrition needed to grow cartilage. I have nine medical professionals in my immediate family; family reunions are exquisitely interesting. I don't blame them; how were they to know I would grow three inches taller in one year as my cartilage healed. It was through their disbelief as I started on my path to healing that motivated me to continue my research. Healed from Chronic Pain is the first book that I plan to write. The second will be a 'how to book' for back pain with the help of two medical professionals. This should be available in a few months as it is about fifty percent complete. There will be others for each disorder from which I recovered. If you have chronic disease or want to be healthy and just feel good, then I suggest you will want to read my work. Thank You!

Introduction
Do not die with a chronic disease while you are nutrient deficient.
– Mark Pegram
This is a story of recovery from debilitating chronic disease that destroyed my physical body, my mind, and my heart. More importantly it is a story that should help you embrace the emergence of the Vitamin D Revolution. It could also be a story about the iodine atrocity, the magnesium wars, the folate deception, or the sulfate error and many others. I will focus on vitamin D as it was the first real evidence that nutrition was an issue for me.
An unusual event happened in my life. Do you know of anyone over the age of fifty who has grown more than two inches in less than a year? That happened to me. Not only did I grow, but I avoided more back surgery! I am now out of pain that destroyed my life economically and emotionally. This occurred because I discovered the medical research about vitamin D. But it was not that easy. You will be startled at how I arrived at my conclusions. I not only share the physical healing, but the emotional healing that took place after severe trauma from failed back surgery, including the struggles with restructuring my trust and belief about the medical industry.
I was filled with frustration after several trips to see my congressman. It was very apparent that the government was not going to intervene into the change of necessary supplements, amounts, and types for health. I had originally thought that I could get action because of the large number of diseases created by multiple deficiencies and the millions of people affected. However, I was wrong and it is apparent that the only way to educate the public is to write. I have suffered long and hard with many diseases and feel empathy for your suffering.
Here is my story and the tools you need to research for yourself on how to regain your health. Again, all medical decisions should be made in conjunction with your doctor. In the summer, spend twenty minutes in the midday sun with the least amount of clothes on possible to keep you from getting locked up. This should be longer if you have darker skin tones. In the winter time supplement with enough vitamin D to keep your serum vitamin D level to that of a sunny country. Research intensely the other nutrients in which you may be deficient. There are doctors and others ready to help you with the hope of a long term solution. Anticipate change!
There are three things in life that you can be certain of; death, taxes, and change.
– Edna Pegram, my Mother

Chapter One
Back Pain and Other Disease
Brokenness Accepted
Emptiness rips holes in my life like nothingness
Has opened up and swallowed me from inside out
A heart that was made to soar with the angels
Drowns in a pool of the unknown without hope
What once I called life seems like total futility
As I try to sort through what makes me or not
High spots turn into the darkest of depths because
They really are or my perspective is distorted
Trapped in this bottomless pit of hopelessness
Makes my soul dry and my heart destroyed
In ways that are only described by the worst of
Tragedies on men as body and mind fail
Institutional rules become a burden so hard that no one
Can bear to live within the boundaries described
My body and mind are in complete emptiness
Racked with pain and loss of the adventure of life
Fully evacuated by total depredation of life
Leaves me swept clean and waiting to be filled, but
Before the demon returns and fills me with his seven
Friends, light up my life with the miracles of health
I do know that You are and that I want to be loved
In all this time my heart has longed to be filled
And I have wasted that on complete faith in human
Endeavors when the thing I needed was a sacred romance
Forgive me Lord as I have held the relationships with others
Above You in trying to fill the voids in my life
As now I behold the beauty that You have created
Fill my emptiness with your joy, I love you Lord
M. Pegram
It seems that severe disease came at the time when my vitamin D status was at its lowest - in late winter or early spring. I did not spend much time in the sun because my mom seemed to think that I would do further damage to myself, as I suffered a heat stroke as a child.
Heat Stroke
It was my job to take the worms off of the tobacco while my brothers pulled off the suckers. On this occasion I just wanted to rest for a while. I was four. A tobacco sled seemed to be the perfect place as far as my brothers were concerned because it was a safe place. A tobacco sled is typically about eight feet long by two feet wide with wooden sides that come up about three feet. When I was playing in the sled, it was in the shade. After I went to sleep, the sun came around and the sled was a perfect hot box.
That night I went into convulsions from the heat and dehydration. I remember well the country doctor in Kernersville, our local small town, as he rotated me from an ice bath to a dilute solution of vinegar bath to get by body heat under control. My fever had reached 107 degrees and there was grave concern about brain damage. Any time that I had trouble learning a new chore, my brothers would heckle me about ‘brain damage’.
My Mom seemed to think that the appropriate thing for me was to stay out of the sun. Since I could not stay out of the sun because of the work that had to be done, the order of the day was always long pants, long sleeve shirt, and a pith helmet, just like you see the guys wearing on safari. This kept me out of the sun and prevented my body from getting the necessary vitamin D for health. I did not have rickets, but I did have continuous problems with back pain from the age of seven. We always assumed that I was just fatigued from the work and the resulting soreness. Whenever I exposed my face to the sun for very long I would get ‘splotchy’ and Mom insisted that I stay covered up.
I am now sure that the splotching was just my skin’s reaction to low vitamin D.
Rheumatic Fever
At the age of seven, I had rheumatic fever. My brother had this same disease the year before in August. He had to be carried up the stairs to his bed because he could not walk. This made an impression; it scared the crap out of me. The following spring I was diagnosed, by a blood test, with the same disease. I was treated with penicillin shots and a three-month course of cortisone, twenty-five milligrams per day. It was, after all, the wonder drug of the moment.
If you know anything about steroids, you know that this is an outrageous amount to give anyone, much less a child. I had ‘moon face’ at the age of seven, one of the symptoms of steroid abuse. If nothing else, it screwed up my hormone (endocrine) system. I went from a weight of sixty-five pounds in the spring to a weight of one-hundred-three pounds that fall. Nobody liked me because I was the new fat kid. There was no detectable heart damage, but for every sniffle they shoved antibiotics down my throat, just in case.
Could I have been so deficient in vitamin D that my body just took on any disease that presented itself?
Vitamin D now has been found to significantly raise your level of immunity to all kinds of disease including viruses. (Arash Hossein-nezhad, et al, 2013) Vitamin D may very well be the seasonal factor in flu and colds
Heat Stroke II
I had another heat stroke when I was fourteen. I passed out in the field one afternoon at three pm after ten hours of labor in the sun fully covered with my mother’s ‘sun shields’. This was more exciting than the first time because my brother dragged me into the shade and dowsed me with a bucket of spring water to revive me. I awoke to my brother laughing his ass off. I was back at work within a couple of hours.
To be brought back to conscious reality in this manner was really exciting. I think that I was more dehydrated than anything. Working fully-covered did not help my body stay cool. I knew that I was in trouble when I stopped sweating but did not have enough sense to stop and re-hydrate.
This full body cover kept me from getting the required amount of vitamin D that my body needed to grow and thrive. It was always constant pain that the brother next to me did not suffer because he was always working with his shirt off. Life would have been so much easier if we had only known.
My body always hurt. (2) I was told that the joint pain and pain in my back was just a remnant of the rheumatic fever. My knees and my shoulders were always in pain when I walked or worked. The worst was when I did repetitive motion activities such as ‘handing’ tobacco. This chore usually started early in the morning and would go until after lunch. We’d gather leaves of tobacco in bunches and handed it to a person that was ‘stringing’ onto a stick. (3) I usually got severe pain between my shoulder blades that radiated down my arms.
