Willpower?
Introduction
––––––––
Change is hard. This is true for all of us. We are creatures of habit. It’s genetically wired into us to keep repeating the same behaviors again and again. Change makes us anxious. It’s the fear of the unknown.
But here’s the truth. You CAN make changes to impact your life. Small changes can add up to big results. Changing your habits can make a big difference in your health, your outlook, your relationships, and your financial success.
This book lays out exactly what you need to do to implement positive changes in your life. It is filled with ideas for ways that you can make small adjustments to your daily routine and see big improvements in your overall health and well-being.
Sometimes the simplest things can lead to big results. Focus on small, sustainable changes that can be out into practice painlessly. Do them repeatedly and they will become an ingrained habit.
Don’t try to take on too many new habits at once. This is a sure recipe for failure. Instead, focus on two or three at a time. Do them daily for a minimum of four to six weeks and in some cases up to three months. This is about the time needed for a new behavior to become a habit.
Once they’re part of your routine, then proceed to adding a couple more. Slowly but steadily you will reform your behavior and start reaping the rewards of your new habits.
Research by Stanford University professor BJ Fogg has uncovered that human behavior is systematic and based on three things—motivation, ability, and triggers.¹ The key to changing any behavior is a three-step process:
1. Pick something small. This is not the time to go big or go home. Focus on the tiniest step on the path toward your goal. Pick a small step toward your goals—a step so tiny, you’ll think it’s ridiculous,
Fogg says. The point here is if you make it really easy, then you’re much more likely to complete the behavior. Now you have something you can build on.
2. Find a trigger. Next, you need to embed this new behavior into an already existing routine in your life. Everyone has daily routine behaviors that are done without even thinking about them. The key is to use these already routine behaviors as triggers for the new behaviors you’d like to implement.
3. Reinforce the new behavior. The best way to reinforce the new behavior is by rewarding yourself. Again, think small here. Something along the lines of telling yourself, great job!
is probably all that is needed. Feeling good about your accomplishments, even if they’re small, sets up a positive reward circuit in the brain that in turn makes it more likely that the behavior will be repeated.
Once you start to experience success with your new tiny habit, you’ll feel more confident and the momentum for positive change will build up leading to bigger and bigger results.
For example, say your goal is to wear sunscreen every day.
First, find a trigger for this new behavior, a place in your daily routine that you could sneak it in without a problem. In this case, maybe you wash your face every morning after you brush your teeth. This would be a likely behavior to use as an anchor.
Next, have the sunscreen available—place it where you can see it next to the sink. On day one just apply a dot to your nose, that’s it. This takes so little effort that you won’t have an excuse for not doing it.
Now, give yourself a smile in the mirror. Good job, you’ve just completed the 3-step process of changing your habits.
After a few days of this, expand the behavior. Now you’re applying sunscreen to your nose and cheeks. Eventually, you’ll be putting sunscreen everywhere it needs to be and it will be an ingrained habit that you no longer have to think about. It’s just part of your morning routine.
So let’s get started.
Chapter 1: Healthy Habits
––––––––
Your health is the most import asset you have. Yet so many of us treat our bodies with disrespect. Filling ourselves with processed foods, smoking, drinking too much, never exercising. If this sounds like you, don’t despair. It’s never too late to improve your health and by making just a couple of healthy changes at a time you can start to see and feel a big improvement in how you look and feel.
Simplicity
Simple changes are all it takes to get on the path to better health. Focus on just one or two priorities
