Foreword
As we write this, we can’t help but think about the estimated 35 million families around the world facing the realities of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. For each, it must seem like the greatest challenge of their lives.
You may be one of them – wondering how to help your gentle father who is suddenly showing fits of anger, or your mother who wanders at night, putting herself at risk and keeping you awake with worry.
For most family carers, caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias is a new and intimidating experience.
Without knowing what triggers behaviours or some practical techniques to counter them, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
It has been nearly 20 years now, but our first experience with Alzheimer’s disease is still crystal clear in our memories. We had just opened the first Home Instead Senior Care® office to provide in-home care for older people. One of our CAREGivers – very frustrated – called to ask for advice. How can I get Marion to change clothes?
she wanted to know. She insists on wearing the same grey trouser suit every day, all day.
How we wish that we knew then what we know now! What a difference it would have made in helping our CAREGiver find a way to get Marion into a fresh set of clothes. We would have simply told her daughter to buy a duplicate of her mother’s favourite grey trouser suit.
And that, of course, is why we are publishing this book – to give you practical advice so that you can confidently face caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease at home. It’s based on two decades of experience working with and supporting people with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. We’ve also asked some of the most respected experts in dementia care to share their insights so people like you can be successful in providing care for Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias at home. Some of the best advice in this book came, not surprisingly, from family carers who shared generously from their own experiences to help you.
At this moment, there are two sobering facts about Alzheimer’s disease. First, our world is experiencing an Alzheimer’s epidemic. Second, in spite of an enormous investment of time, money and medical talent, no cure or prevention for Alzheimer’s disease has been found and none is expected in the foreseeable future.
For almost every family, that care begins at home and is provided by someone just like you. Without training, most are likely unfamiliar with dementia in any form, and already over-committed with children and a job. Still, they are totally committed to caring for Mum or Dad out of love and a sense of responsibility.
If that’s you, then you are exactly the person for whom we’ve written this book.
Through our work in providing care to tens of thousands of people with dementia, we’ve learnt that the behavioural symptoms sometimes exhibited by those with the disease are also the most frustrating to deal with. So with this book we want to help you understand what may cause those behaviours, how to deal with them, and what you can do to help prevent or alleviate them.
We also understand that there can be emotional and physical consequences for
