    Chapter One

Poppy, get out here. He’s just come in.

Poppy Duval set down her coffee mug and frowned at Heather, her friend and co-worker. I’m still on break.

Jack’s here. He’s looking around for you.

Poppy laughed. He’s looking for someone to wait on him, and you’re in here.

Heather put a hand on her hip. Get out there right now, girlfriend. The guy’s hot, he’s nice, and he likes you.

Oh, okay. Poppy tried to look stern but she felt warm all over. She’d been working at the coffee shop for two months, since getting laid off from her job as an art teacher in one of Philadelphia’s high schools. John Joseph Crossan IV had come in every day since she started. He always had a ready smile and a kind word for her. Truth be told, she had a crush on the hunky guy from one of Philadelphia’s richest families. Not that she’d ever have a chance with him.

Drawing a deep breath, Poppy drank him in. He was delicious, with his dark blond hair, a trifle too long and curling around his ears. Black jeans hugged his tight butt and showcased legs that went on forever. His black T-shirt stretched across a broad, muscular back. The man belonged on a movie set, not in the corporate headquarters of a Fortune 500 company.

He turned. When he saw her, he breathed a sigh of relief and hurried over. For the first time, he didn’t have a smile for her.

Hi, Jack, she said. The usual?

    Sure.

At his distracted manner, she wrinkled her brow, but got busy making his drink, a cinnamon spice latte. Finished, she handed it across the counter to him. He fished bills out of his wallet and handed them to her.

Keep the change, he said, as he always did.

    Thanks.

They stared at each other. His translucent green eyes seemed to bore into hers.

I need to talk to you, Poppy. Can you take a break?

I’ll get Heather to cover for me.

Once she’d called to Heather to relieve her,
