Dedication
This book is dedicated to anyone that has ever had a dream. Anyone who’s dream has ever been placed on a shelf and to all those who couldn’t seem to make that initial connection between their dream and where they stood.
I’d also like to dedicate this to all my friends that have encouraged and supported me throughout the years. I have learned that the friends you choose are far better than the friends that choose you. I may have fewer friends today than I once had but I now have vastly better people in my life. To each of you, I say thank you for being far more than a friend. Thank you for being my support and strength.
I also want to dedicate this to my mom and dad. There are seldom good enough words to describe all the things they have done for me and the role they had in shaping the person I’ve become. So I will only say a simple but heartfelt - ‘Thank You’ and ‘I love you’. Dad, you continue to be greatly missed!
A SPECIAL NOTE TO THE READER OF THIS BOOK
In my life I have been extremely blessed to have had some pretty amazing people cross my path. Some were complete strangers that showed me kindness and shared wisdom when they had no reason, while others were mean, uncharitable and sad. Still others were close friends and co-workers or simply people I met along the way in my professional and personal life. And it is this wisdom that each of them intentionally or unintentionally passed down to me over the years that wish to share with you.
In this book I will be revealing snapshots of experiences and stories that may be about or include some of the people that have influenced my life. Some of the details and names have been altered, left out, or dramatized so that they more closely pertain to the message I wish to convey.
Also, please know that I am not a medical doctor, licensed psychologist, psychotherapist, psychiatrist, or any other degreed specialist nor do I claim any such distinction. I am simply a student of life and the teaching of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. While I am willing to share with you what I have learned and how it has changed my life, none of this information should be construed to be professional advice. If you feel you need professional advice in any subject area I may touch on in this book, please seek out and consult with a certified or licensed professional in that area.
Neither I nor the publisher of this book is responsible for anything that actually happens in your life, including anything good or bad as a result of your doing or not doing any of the things I talk about in this book. To the contrary I hope to convey the idea that your life is what it is or isn’t solely by the choices you make. I simply hope to help you choose to make for yourself the best life possible.
I also sincerely hope that a word or two, an idea or a concept within these pages brings you hope, encouragement and motivation to pursue a greater sense of happiness and a belief that your very own dream is something achievable, real and pursuing it is something possible, no matter how big, difficult, or out of this world it may seem. Yours in Christ – John R Buck

A Forward from a Special Friend
I hope that you are lucky enough to have a few people in your life who ALWAYS make you feel good. When you see their names on your caller ID, you feel good. When you receive a FaceBook message from them, you know that it will be positive. If you run into them at a store or restaurant, your whole day is brighter.
Do you ever wish that you were one of those
people? What is so special about those
people? Why do we feel so good when we are around them? Why are they always so positive? They don’t have some profound secret. They are simply truly happy people, and it’s really enjoyable to be with truly happy people. John Buck is one of those
people in my life. He is one of those truly happy people.
John was referred to me regarding a business transaction. It only took a moment to determine that we were not the business source that he was looking for, but he was a delight to talk with. We visited on the phone and laughed like old friends, even though we had never met! John’s wonderful sense of humor, strong faith, and enjoyment of life came through loud and clear. As the call came to a close, I found myself asking if we could keep in touch, and we’ve done so ever since.
I felt privileged when John asked me to be one of the first to read this book and offer him my opinion. As I read through the pages, I began to feel that I understood a little more about John as a person and how he learned the lessons revealed in this book.
I’m sure that most of you reading this have your own idea of what it means to be happy and successful, and I hope that, like me, you feel generally happy and satisfied with your success. Without making me feel as if my life was anything less than what I felt it was, John’s ideas led me to look at some areas of my life with a new perspective. After making a few small adjustments requiring minimal effort, I began to feel greater enjoyment and feel more successful about my life than I had ever felt before.
The results were amazing. As John said in the book, I made a few small adjustments, and changes seemed to start happening automatically as a result. I began to see better solutions to problems. I began to feel more successful, and believe that greater successes were in my future. I hadn’t felt that way in quite some time.
As I read First Thing First, I learned to recognize that my happiness was not only a process, but a choice to be made every day. The same is true of success. My feelings of success actually came from experiencing the positive emotional feelings gained from my personal achievements. I began to understand why happier people are more successful than those who are less happy. I truly began to understand that my feelings of happiness were directly linked to the success I felt in my life.
What I had not anticipated from First Thing First was a real understanding and feeling of Joy. I knew what joy was in theory, but I never really thought about experiencing it. Now I do.
The best news of all is that John is willing to share all these simple life changes with you in this wonderfully life changing book. I truly hope that you enjoy First Thing First and allow him to help you to be a happier more successful person. Let him help you be one of those
people to the people in your life.

P.S. John told me that he wanted this to be a book that I would buy as a gift or share with someone else. Without question, I told him it was, and I hope that you will feel the same way.
In our struggle to constantly reach for success and pursue our dreams it is so easy to become discouraged when the reward we are looking for always seems just out of reach. BUT the connection is closer and easier than you think.
"Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." -Harriet Tubman
Chapter 1
My Discoveries
Like most everyone else I have heard, read and seen about all the motivational material anyone can stand in one lifetime. I was spending more time reading, listening and watching this stuff and then getting excited about my dream than I was actually pursuing and doing something about achieving it. I also realized that at the same time, I was helping someone else finance their own dream. I was so caught up in the imagining stage that I was never really moving forward with the achieving stage of my dream.
Speaking for myself and I believe for many of you, I found that, for me, there was a sort of disconnect between getting motivated
