1.INTRODUCTION
Do you want to start a profitable worm business on a very small budget and in a limited space, but don’t know how and where to start?
No need to look any further!
This book will tell you step by step, with easy to follow instructions, all you need to know about starting a profitable worm business from scratch!
A mature compost worm
I will share from my wealth of experience of more than 15 years as a worm farmer and worm business entrepreneur. Regardless of whether you just want to make some pocket money with a single worm-bin selling bait worms; or whether you want to create a full-time income for you and your family, you will learn proven low cost methods to start a worm business and make your mark in the constantly growing market of the worm farming industry.
When I told friends and family in 1998 that I intended to start a business breeding and selling worms in my backyard many of them probably thought that I was just a few French fries short of a happy meal!
Can one really make money with worms?
The answer is a resounding yes!
I make a living by breeding, growing and selling worms as well as other supplementary products in and from my backyard, and have done so for more than 15 years now!
There are a lot of passionate people who have built up flourishing businesses by farming earthworms, and I wish them all the best and continued success!
I make no claim that my methods are the only way to succeed, but we have worked with worms successfully for many years now and I am sure that this book will show you what methods and tools you need to start a profit making worm business of your own. As the title of this book states the main focus is to show low cost options to raise and sell worms to people that would love to create some extra income but have very limited funds to invest into a new business opportunity.
If you can’t invest a lot of cash but have the enthusiasm to make things happen you can start a successful worm business on a surprisingly low budget! You can work on your worm farming project part time or full time; keep it small so you can handle it alone or with a partner; or you can grow it into a big venture. A worm farmer doesn’t need to be a technical genius or have loads of space to succeed! With a little area like a cellar, garage or backyard, some discipline and the determination to succeed, anyone can make it happen!

2.ESSENTIALS FOR WORM FARMING
How much space is required to start a worm farming business?
To start a worm farming business you do not need loads of space. A worm-composting project can easily be started in a storeroom, garage, garden or back yard.
There are obviously a few requirements that you need to meet to guarantee a smooth and satisfactory working process. Have a look at the list below to get an idea of the initial space requirements for your worm farming business. We are working on the potential requirements for 10 breeder bins with 1000 mature worms in each bin and a 5m square bulk bed. This set up should enable you to have between 60,000 to 70,000 worms on your worm farm at any given time. This should be a sufficient population to enter the market on a modest scale without depleting your supply of worms through sales. To achieve this production capacity you will need approximately:
1 x Bulk bed5m²
10 x Breeder bins3m²
Composting area4m²
Worm food storage2m²
Working table/s2m²
Space for equipment3m²
Space for products5m²
Space for bottles1m²
Packaging area2m²
Packaging materials½m²
Desk and office space 3m²
This is only a guideline. If you plan your project well you could start with even less than 30 square meters to get your worm business going.
You can expand later in accordance with the needs of your business.

3.PLANNING THE WORM FARMING PROJECT
To get the ball rolling and your worm farming business on its way you will just need 4 basic components:
< Worm bedding
< Worm food
< Worm bins /boxes /farms
< Worms
Study this chapter carefully as it contains the bulk of knowledge you need to have to successfully establish your worm business.
Let’s have a closer look at each of the 4 key components of any worm farming business:
Worm bedding
< What can be used as bedding?
< How can it be obtained or prepared?
Worm bedding is an essential component of any worm bin. It provides protection as a safe retreat to which your worms can migrate from other areas of the bin, such as the upper level where the food is placed.
A bucket with soaked newspaper strips
The environmental conditions in the food layer can become temporarily uncomfortable or even life threatening for worms for many reasons. For example, excessive heat created by the rotting process, or over acidity or souring of the food that has been added can be harmful!
Worms in a piece of corrugated cardboard
Another problem that would force your worms to retreat to lower safer layers of a worm bin could be the lack of moisture near the surface area of the bin.
Any of the above mentioned situations would animate your worms to dig down deeper into the bedding. Worms will be able to process food that is too acidic to live in, as long as they have an area of safe bedding to retreat to after their meal.
There are many different materials that you can use to prepare safe bedding for your worm bins.
Amongst the most popular are:
< Horse manure with or without straw or wood shavings
< Cattle manure with straw
< Sheep manure with straw
< Rabbit manure
< Shredded cardboard
< Shredded or torn up newspaper
< Garden compost
< Nutrient rich topsoil
All these materials make excellent safe bedding and most of them should be available at a very low cost or no cost at all. If you have farms nearby just call them and ask if you could assist them with their waste management by collecting some of their cow, sheep, horse, or rabbit manure. If you are lucky and negotiate well, some farmers or horse owners might even pay you to collect their organic waste, or deliver it to your property free of charge.
If you live in an urban area and have no access to any of the above-mentioned manures, or legislation does not permit the use of manure in your area, then use shredded cardboard or shredded or torn up newspaper for worm bedding.
It shouldn’t be a problem to convince friends, family and neighbor’s to keep their old newspapers for you. Another option is to contact local shops and ask them to keep their old cardboard boxes for you. Just
