Hard to continue reading as author recommends having a diet low in sugar and dairy and almost all recipes in the book have added white or brown sugar. Very contradictory.

Introduction: What is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that allows you to open and close the jaw. The joint connects the mandible or lower jaw to the upper jaw and face. This joint is known as the TMJ and is the only connection of the mandible to the rest of the body. The joint is a smooth ball-in-socket joint that is flexible enough to open and close the jaw, move the jaw from side to side and be able to accurately chew food. The muscles around the TMJ support the joint and control its movement and function.

The temporomandibular joint is located in front of your ears. When you open and close the jaw, you can feel the stretch of the skin overlying the joint. The joint normally has a smooth ball in joint movement. If you feel too much crunching and clicking of the joint, you might have TMJ syndrome.

The lower jaw or mandible consists of the ball part of the joint called the condyles. The socket is located on the temporal bone of the head, which is why the joint is called the temporo-mandibular joint. There is a soft disc between the condyle and the temporal bone that acts like a shock absorber to make the joint protected from certain movements and chewing behaviors.

The TMJ is one of the most complicated joints in the body because it has a hinge-type behavior and sliding mobility that makes it easy to malfunction. The jaw joint also has a complex system of muscles and ligaments that hold the joint together as it moves.

TMJ disorders can cause significant pain and dysfunction of the jaw joint. The muscles that control jaw movement can be too tight and this can cause stiffness of the joint. More than 20 million people in the US are believed to be affected by TMJ disorders. More women seem to have the problem when compared to men.

Most people have no pain or problems with the TMJ; however some will have cyclical pain in the joint that goes away without any
